How I Became a Top Writer in Less Than 60 Days
I’m a top writer in ‘Satire’
Today, I got an e-mail from Medium with great news: “Congrats, you’re a top writer in Satire on Medium.”
I have been writing on Medium for less than 60 days; I published my first Medium story on August 31st. So, it is definitely possible to achieve a top writer status as a new Medium writer.
Of course, I was super happy about the news! I was a bit surprised too because I have published only four stories with the ´Satire´ tag on Medium. But these stories have done very well. One of them is my most popular Medium story. I think this is the reason I got the top writer tag in ´Satire´.
I wasn’t actually trying to achieve the top writer tag in ´Satire´. I just happened to write some stories with the ´Satire´ tag that got popular. But this definitely encourages me to continue writing satire.
How to Get a Top Writer Award on Medium?
All tags on Medium have top writers, even tags that have only one Medium story. But only 73 tags entitle you to the top writer award.
I recently wrote a post about being a top writer in “wrong” tags. So, I was already a top writer in some other tags, but these tags didn’t entitle me to the official top writer status.
If you want the official top writer award, you need to target some of the 73 official top writer tags. You must add the tags to your stories. But it doesn’t make sense to tag stories with irrelevant tags, so the tags should actually fit the topic of your story.
So, targeting the right tags is the first step. What else do you need to become a top writer? It seems there are two ways to reach the top writer status.
1. Write Quality Stories with the Tag You’re Targeting
The first way to do it is to write popular stories with the tag you’re targeting. Of course, you can’t control if you’re stories become popular or not. The only thing you can control is writing quality content.
If your stories become popular, you don’t need as many stories to reach the top writer tag. As I mentioned, I’ve only published four Medium stories with the ´Satire´ tag and I got the top writer status. But most likely you still need to publish multiple stories within a month with the same tag.
So, aiming for quality is the first way to pursue the top writer status. The second way is, obviously, quantity.
2. Write Lots of Stories with the Tag You’re Targeting
Even if your stories don’t become very popular, you can reach the top writer status if you focus on quantity. Publishing stories with the same tag daily for a month definitely raises your odds to get the top writer award.
I’m kind of trying to do this with some other tags now. We’ll see how it goes.
Other Things to Consider About the Top Writer Tags
Some tags are easier to get the top writer status in than others. Top writer tags with fewer stories are easier than the most popular tags.
Even so, you get the same glory for any top writer tag, regardless of how “easy” or “difficult” the tag is. So, if you really want the top writer status, targeting the top writer tags with fewer stories might be a good move.
