I Became a Top Writer in My First Full Month on Medium
My journey to this pleasant surprise

Yesterday, as I was running errands, I got an email from Medium.
“Congratulations, you’re a top writer in This Happened to Me on Medium”
I am floored. I was not expecting this!
Honestly, I love writing. I love sharing my stories. Earning a top writer badge is such a fantastic achievement. I can only grow from here, and I am so excited about what I can achieve next!
When I joined Medium, I intended to earn a name for myself and bring in some money for my family. But aside from that, I wanted to share my writing with others.
I wanted to grow as a writer and make this my career.
All the personal essays I had been writing over the years for fun could become a job for me.
On July 30th, I decided that I would make Medium my full-time job and begin to explore freelance writing; I needed to make a career out of this.
I scoured Youtube, Reddit, and Medium itself to understand how to be successful on this site. What are the top writers talking about, what types of trends are occurring, and most importantly, how can I best capture readers’ attention?
This decision to become a writer on Medium did not come out of the blue. I had always wondered about blogging as a career. I was recently looking for a blogging platform that paid their writers and allowed them to have complete control over their work.
Almost one whole month in, and I love every bit of Medium so far. Although the money I’ve earned and my views are incredible, finding my passion has been the most rewarding part.
I plan on sharing my experience on Medium every month. Posting about my journey on Medium will serve as a tool to track my progress while inspiring other writers to join Medium.
My niche is focused on mental health and self-improvement. Mental health is a vast world that has many different topics. But all of my life experiences have tied into my mental health.
I spent hours learning the in’s and out’s of Medium. I had to learn the tagging system for Medium, as every site is different. I spent a few hours learning Medium’s popular tags and was able to find a spot where I fit in. From learning Medium’s tag system, I have learned where my niche is.
I’ve gone through a lot of struggles in my life that have left me facing difficult situations. Through those hard times, I have discovered life-changing lessons that have brought me to where I am today.
I wrote so many stories about my life and what lessons I’ve learned. From my searching, I found the This Happened To Me tag. I read many stories on that tag and saw that I had experiences that I could write about and share with others.
The experience I chose to write about was filling a need that was already there. Some people enjoy reading experiences that other people have had. It builds such a great community.
Talking about the narcissist in my life has given me an excellent platform to work off when it comes to writing for Medium. Narcissism is what I know and what I have experienced. I have countless stories and numerous bits of advice.
During these difficult moments, I wished I had been able to read about people’s real-life experiences. Sharing similar pain with someone else, and knowing that they made it out of this difficult time, can bring hope.
I want people to know that they are more than their mental illness. There is hope when times are dark.
Connecting with so many excellent writers on Medium has given me a strong sense of community.
Through this, I have found that sharing my opinions is scary but necessary. There is always the fear of rejection, but we are also missing out on incredible opportunities.
I am so grateful and humbled to be where I am at right now. Thank you to the followers who have been there since day one and my entire family for always supporting me. And a super huge thanks to my amazing husband for supporting and encouraging my writing. I wouldn’t be here without you, baby.
