I Ate Chicken Rice Balls in Melaka And Other Cool Things
I had to try all the fantastic food here!

Last year, I visited Melaka (Melacca) for two days. It’s a short 1.5 hour drive away from Kuala Lumpur, so it’s well worth the trip to explore even more of Malaysia.
Malaysia is food heaven, so I was eager to check out everything here. I wasn’t disappointed! There were a lot of things to try, here’s what I ate on my trip to Melaka!
Chicken Rice Ball
This was pretty cool. It’s actually just rice, shaped into a ball. You order it by pieces. At first I thought they were huge pieces, so we ordered like one or two. 🤣 The server probably laughed at us a little inside. Usually people order like 10 or more! When the rice balls came, we had a good laugh ourselves. It was literally one bite. See, you always learn something on vacation! We ended up having to order more. 😂

Nyonya
I already wrote a separate story on my experience with Nyonya cuisine, so I won’t repeat it here. In short, I enjoyed all the food very much!

Steamboat + “Lok-Lok” = Satay Celup
This is a must-try for visitors to Melaka. It’s a very interesting combination of Steamboat and Lok-Lok. Say what?
Steamboat can be thought of as Hot Pot, where you put your food in boiling broth. Lok-Lok is a different version, where the food is on skewers. You dip the skewers in to cook it and then dip it in different sauces for flavouring.
What you see in the photo below is a combination of the two! Skewers are dipped into a boiling pot of satay. I did not eat this because I don’t eat spicy food. All you need to do is grab the skewers you want from the fridge and you’re ready to start cooking.
WAIT, YOU NEED TO KNOW THIS.
There is also something else special about this. The boiling satay broth? It is recycled from customer to customer. This means that this satay was used from a previous customer and then passed onto the next customer’s table.
I had to absorb this for a second. I thought each pot of satay was freshly made. To be honest, I didn’t like the idea that someone else had used the satay broth already. I went in October 2022, so it looks like Covid measures aren’t in place anymore.
What do you think, would you be able to eat from a used pot of broth?

Chicken Rice
Let’s get back to some familiar territory. We didn’t know where to eat, so we stumbled upon a restaurant near Jonker Walk. I felt like I couldn’t order anything because everything was spicy! I ended up getting this dish. It’s chicken and rice. You can’t go wrong with that.
By the way, the rice is green because it’s pandan rice.

Delicious Burger!
I felt bad for ordering a burger and fries, but it looked so tempting! It didn’t disappoint either, it tastes as delicious as it looks! The bun was so soft.
Very satisfying!

And those were the meals I had while I was in Melaka. I’m really curious to know if you’d try out the recycled broth of Satay Celup! Share your thoughts about it in the comments below!
