Summary

The author, Dr. Jackie Greenwood, reflects on a night of insomnia spent eating "Good Night" crackers and contemplating life, including personal family concerns and the broader context of global events, culminating in a poignant dream about her son, a doctor working in an ICU during a challenging time.

Abstract

In "INSOMNIA #3," Dr. Jackie Greenwood shares a personal account of a sleepless night. She grapples with hunger, depression, and the monotony of the "carb thing" while acknowledging the world's happenings beyond the realm of politics. As she drifts off, she dreams of her son, a doctor, who is distant from his family and dealing with the pressures of an ICU during a pandemic. The article is a blend of introspection and concern for her son's well-being, with a touch of humor in the face of life's challenges. The narrative ends with a contemplation on the appropriate time to call her son, deciding to wait until 5 am, and a nod to her previous writings and advice from Patrick M. Ohana.

I don't know what I was thinking hungry, maybe depressed, maybe that carb thing

Blah, blah, blah talking heads, there is other stuff happening in the world besides politics and he who should not be named ever again never again

I was ranting as my eyes closed so no surprise- that white field, moonlit expanse of my dreams

a figure in a grey parka tromps through the snow ahead of me I call out and he turns, hooded face circled by a rim of fake fur no features

but I know who it is my son the doctor the one far away from home the one with two small children the one whose wife is struggling the one working in an ICU the one watching people die every day

is 3 am too early to call?

I’ll wait til 5
