I Am Grateful That I’m Not Responsible for Heaving the Sun Into the Sky

And other notes on gratitude

Photo by malith d karunarathne on Unsplash

I’m grateful that it’s 6:12 am and that there are still 18 more minutes before I have to wake the house up and get ready for the day.

Of all the things I have to do, of all the apprehensions in my heart (which there are many), I am grateful that I’m not the one responsible for heaving the sun up into the sky.

Last week around the equinox, the moon and the sun had a standoff in my driveway. They were both their round selves in the purplish-pink dawn, but it did not seem like the moon would relent and drop off into somewhere else’s night.

I got into the car and while we drove to school; I tried to get pictures of the standoff, but despite the miracle of my hand-held device, all the pictures were muted.

I am grateful that there are some things that we cannot capture, that elude our best efforts — that we are required to witness for ourselves.

I am also grateful that though my kids were annoyed by my slow, stop-start drive into town, we arrived safely.

Such a small thing: to get to school safely. However, talk to just one person who has had their life obliterated by an unexpected tragedy, and it’s no small thing for the world to unfold in the precise, predictable way that makes us feel secure.

Especially if your mom is distracted and taking pictures of the moon while driving.

It’s 6:33 am.

Times up.

Wishing you the best and smoothest of days.

-Mercedes
