People approach Medium with various perspectives and goals. Some are here because they are writers from the heart, and have values and thoughts they need to deliver for the whole world. Others are approaching to earn money or promoting something with their writing, like Affiliate Marketing for example.

Another group are writers who enjoy writing and want to make a career out of it, and they see Medium as a good avenue to start growing as a writer, and hopefully, one day make a full-time income out of it.

So, whatever your intentions, it’s important to understand that the average earning for writers on Medium is quite low, and varies significantly depending on several factors. Most writers around 94% earn less than $100 per month on Medium.

Sorry to start by saying that, but in this article I will breakdown why so many people are ending up with low earning on Medium, and how to put yourself in the remaining 6%.

Based on that, it’s very important to approach Medium with realistic expectations and dreams, as not everyone on the platform will achieve full-time income from Medium as a writer.

At least during the starting time low earnings can be expected, but maybe in the long run that can change, and there is always an exception, so don’t be discouraged.

Being successful on Medium is based upon many factors, which I will discuss in this article.

Let’s start with the basics first. To join the Medium Partner Program, so you can be able to earn money, is based on the following criteria.

Writers need to be at least 18 years old, live in an eligible country.

As of today, there are only 40 countries eligible for the Medium Partner Program.

Medium doesn’t disclose the exact number of participants, but it is estimated according to many sources that approximately 5% of Medium writers participate in the Medium Partner Program, which could translate to roughly 5 million members based on the 100+ million users of Medium.

So the following percentages let’s say are based on those 5M Members/Writers.

Based on those numbers, the earnings percentages can be as follows:

• 94%: Earn less than $100 per month. This is the vast majority of writers on Medium. Those are the writers who publish infrequently, new writers, or those who publish in niches with lower engagement.
• 5%: Earn between $100 and $1,000 per month. That group of writers likely publishes more consistently and has built a small audience. If you are part of this group, so hope is on the way!!😊👍
• 1%: Earn between $1,000 and $5,000 per month. Those are the writers who have established a strong pool of audience, consistently create high-quality stories, and constantly engage with their readers. $$$😍
• Top 0.1%: Earn over $5,000 per month. This is the elite group that represents the most successful writers on Medium, and I believe on other platforms as well. They have a large list of followers, consistently engaging with them, and they are experts in their field. $$$$👌😍

So, if we plot those 1% earning between $1,000 and $5,000 per month on the 5M Members/Writers, that can equal an average of 50,000 Writers earning that much every month. Not a huge population, but still a good number.

That is in addition to another 5% which earns between $100 and $1,000 per month. That is another 250,000 writers, and those numbers can increase depending on some factors we will discuss in this article.

So there is always room for new writers to earn good money from Medium. Just take it serious, do the required work, and you will be rewarded for sure!😊👌👍

Let’s dive straight into the factors you should keep in consideration to increase your chance for High Earnings on Medium:

Consistency and High-Quality Content:

• Frequency: Aim for 2–3 articles per week or 10–12 per month. Maintain consistency to build audience loyalty and engagement.
• Quality: Invest in editing (using Grammarly or other similar programs is a must to avoid small grammatical errors), proofreading (take your time, don’t rush it), and formatting (That is what attracts the eyes of the readers, make it a good reading experience). And always focus on clear writing, strong storytelling, and valuable insights.
• Research & Data: Back your claims with credible sources and data. This enhances authority and fosters trust with readers.
• Visuals: Include high-quality images and relevant visuals to break up text and improve engagement.
• Originality: Avoid repetitive content. Strive for unique perspectives and insightful analysis.

Building & Engaging Your Audience:

• Optimize your profile: Craft a compelling bio and avatar that reflects your personality and expertise. Readers can come across your profile and get hooked for good!! Do a good job there. Pin your Best Work, so you can keep readers moving from one great article to the next on your profile.
