Do you know how to make the best of your life?
Cheryl Richardson has been an important person in my life. When I was considering attending coaching school, she was the one the who moved me to say “Yes.” I attended a workshop where she moved an attendee into commited action within five minutes of her coaching demonstration.
To say I was impressed, is an understatement. I have an autographed copy of her book “The Art of Extreme Self-Care” that I keep on my desk and refer to often for myself and my clients.
Cheryl was the first President of the International Coaching Federation and the first master level coach. She has written numerous self-help books through the years such as “Stand up for your Life” and her latest “ Waking up in Winter.” She also has a very active on-line community on the various platforms. In person she is very approachable and down to earth.
I knew I had to listen to her last week during the 16th Annual Tapping Summit. Her subject matter intrigued me as always which was titled “Making the Rest of Your Life, the Best of Your Life.”
How do we feel good about the passing of time? As we go down the path of life, we find our inner life energy taking center stage instead of our outer energy.
Cheryl spoke about the Hindu Four Stages of Life termed Ashrama’s Stages. which are as follows:
- The Student Phase.
This is the younger self who is is generally anxious and unsure about who we are. We are often times running at a million miles an hour, not taking time to question our lives too much. We are just trying to get to the finish line of whatever project we are working on.
2. Householder
As it sounds, making a nest, making a living/making a family and setting up house.
3. Hermit Stage
Recognizing energy levels and how you spend it. Creating more boundaries, self-care and inner balance. Sharing wisdom.
4. Wandering Recluse
This is the end of life stage where one is transforming from the physical world to the beyond.
I look at the above list and what comes to mind is #1. I think about always being a student of life and wanting to gain more knowledge until my last breath. I laugh when I think about taking my last breath on the dance floor where I am guided to be spontaneous and learning new steps. This is the essence of who I am.
Being a student of life is what gives me a sense of excitement for making the best of my life.
There are those of us who with every birthday, dread the passing of time. Some of us are “past oriented”. We’ve all heard “I remember when”.
Or are you “present-oriented”? Meaning, do you look at life with excitement, and what’s next? There might be a little voice inside you that receives the message, “I shouldn’t be doing this anymore?” Is this you or what our culture has told you?
What is your self-talk about? Are you living with a nasty roommate?! Limit the “replay” in your mind. Your mind does not own you and you are not a servant to your thoughts. Become an ally to yourself and let go of behaviors from the past that are generally negative.
Base your actions on what you believe to be true, not what others think you “should” do. Make a commitment to “break up with your mind” and embrace all the possibilities around you. Make your primary practice one of being alive in the present while keeping mortality in mind as we never know what lies ahead.
Be mindful of balancing your inner and outer life as much as possible.
And do share your thoughts on what for you makes your best life.
I was very inspired by this story about Yoga Nidre by Dr. Preeti Singh. There are days I would like to rise earlier and this gave me pause.
I enjoyed this informative story about how to be an editor on the internet by Matesanz⚕️
