How we should look at ourselves

I trust that it is always our aspiration to write better each day. The Medium community allows us to express ourselves by writing on different topics and getting feedback from our readers.

If you want to submit your articles to any publications, different editors have different standards that they will impose. Sometimes, when I get a comment from the editors, I feel like switching my article to another publication.

But I paused. I always tell myself to avoid switching because when an editor demands adjustments to our content, they have our good in mind. They want us to write better. And when we can write better, it helps to raise the standard in their publication.

Writers who are also editors usually have a higher level of competency with the English Language, and to see things from their perspectives is a learning experience for us.

Hence, I will rewrite or add content to my article. It will be more acceptable when I re-submit my article.

Tools that I will use

A helpful tool that I use is Grammarly. It helps me correct most parts of my English grammar and phrases. There is other software you can use, but Grammarly seems to be more popular.

Next is a dictionary. You can download a dictionary app on your mobile phone for use. Or you can key in the word into your Google search and be directed to some online dictionaries.

Sometimes, it is good to slow down to check the meaning of certain words. Some words in your culture may have different meanings when you use them for an overseas audience. They do not use the word the same way as you do locally.

The next is a thesaurus because we do not want to use the exact words repeatedly. Sometimes another word is better for use. Again, we can use google to check the synonyms for certain words.

Style and originality

We must strive for style and originality in our writings. We can achieve this by writing regularly and meticulously checking the words’ suitability.

We need not have to envy another writer’s fluency in their language. All of us come from different backgrounds, educationally and culturally. Hence, to be original is to express the way you speak if you were to talk to a friend.

We cannot pretend to be someone else because different writers will have different levels of competencies in the language. Just be yourself; that is the real you in your writings.

Do you try to be someone else? Much as I would envy some writers who can speak and write with impressive words and words that I need to look up in a dictionary, I know I will never be able to catch up with them.

I must return to school from a young age and undergo the same training as theirs to be close to their standard.

Some writers are journalists and writers by their profession. We should be ourselves to do our best. At least nobody needs to check a dictionary when they read my writings. I think it is simple enough to communicate.
