4 Easy Tips Writers Can Use to Create Irresistible Headlines

By Dawn Bevier

I’ve been a professional writer and editor for over 25 years, much of it in the print space where headlines rule.

Early in my career, I had the good fortune to be able to meet with some of the country’s best and brightest copywriters. I learned some of their tips and techniques. But to be honest, I still struggle massively with writing good headlines. For me, it is the most challenging part of writing, sucking significant time and energy from my day.

Bevier’s piece helped me focus on just a few easy and practical techniques that can make a big difference. I’m all about the 80–20 rule, and if I can do just a few things well and still get big results, I’m in.

How to Properly Promote Your Blog Posts on Twitter

By Becca Bycott

I’ll be honest: I find Twitter boring.

There, I said it.

But I know many people love it, and more importantly, it’s a great way to promote your writing. So I’m trying to focus on how to do Twitter right.

In the past, I’ve tended to treat my social media marketing as more of a chore than a challenge. Bycott’s piece helped me re-frame that by giving me specific tools for doing a better job of getting the word out to the Twitter-sphere.

What Life Is Like When You Make $25,000 a Month from Writing

By Tim Denning

Guys, guys, GUYS! The headline alone? Am I right?

I don’t know what I expected when I clicked on this article, but it wasn’t a think piece on what it feels like to have a nice disposable income. I was probably expecting more of a roadmap to making $25,000 a month from my writing.

Still, I read all the way through, in part to reward Denning for such a great headline and in part because he had some good insights. My favorite:

“What good comes from making $25,000? Bizarrely, having the opportunity to be helpful. You can use the money to be more helpful and to help more people.”

He was talking about more than donating to charity or being generous with gifts to friends. He was talking about how your writing can be helpful to your readers.

After all, writing can change lives. The power of the pen and all that. This is probably why I chose to be a writer in the first place. It was nice to be reminded of that.
