What Life Is Like When You Make $25,000 a Month from Writing
It’s not the dream you imagine and, in fact, it won’t change all that much

Recently, I wrote about what it was like, and how it was possible, to make $25,000 in a month from writing.
This time, I want to discuss what life is like when you make the sort of money that none of us really need to live. The messages I get online suggest that life must be remarkable or a dream as a writer when $25,000 is your total income for the month. I realize it’s a privilege to make this sort of money and remind myself daily. But it was never my aim.
I am trying to be the hearing aid for those few deaf people who want to be able to listen to what the world has to offer again, rather than live in deathly silence for eternity.
This article is not a humble brag and the intent is a little different. It’s an article designed to make you think about money, what to do with it, and why we obsess over it when it’s not required.
Life Doesn’t Change That Much
A few years ago, I couldn’t even earn $20 from writing. No one wanted to pay me. In fact, if you listen to my friends, they will tell you that I started out as a writer that was taken advantage of. My writing was given away to people for free in return for exposure.
I don’t believe I was taken advantage of, though. I believe that those first few years of working for free were about building the habit, demonstrating my work ethic and learning what advice might be helpful to strangers.
The first few years were about working for free so that I could learn about the content and ideas that would eventually lead to making money.
You can’t expect payment when you have nothing to be paid for.
Comparing those first few years to right now, the money hasn’t changed things that much. You’d think life might have changed a lot. My view of the world has changed, my beliefs have changed, who I am has changed, but money hasn’t created any noticeable change.
Who you are before the money becomes who you are when you have the money.
That’s why it’s important in the early years to focus on the sort of person you are rather than the endless pursuit to make money. A person with money who is an asshole is a person that’s going to be unhappy no matter what.
The Joy Is Never the Bank Deposit
Playing games designed to predict your income or predict what you can buy never brings joy. Each bank deposit feels good for 3.5 seconds and then your mind switches to “What’s next?”
Money is an empty feeling — especially when you are such a minimalist that you don’t really have any shopping lists of purchases you want to make. The only purchase I’ve ever wanted to make is to buy more time so I can write but death screws that idea right up.
My one goal is to publish my work as often as possible and the platforms that allow me to do so don’t charge a cent. If they did charge, I’d probably spend the $25,000 on the entry fee to continue writing and hitting publish.
The greatest joy that comes from writing is getting to do it. It’s having the health, time, and patience to rip the ideas out of your head and put them on an empty document, while not crucifying yourself in the process.
Forgiving People Who Don’t Like Seeing You Win
The downside of making money as a writer is that some people won’t like it. You will get nasty messages or comments telling you to shut the hell up.
The opposite is cool to understand. When you attract people that don’t like seeing you win, you get to play a different game. That game is to forgive the people who tear you down or dislike you publicly.
Someone recently sent me a few social media posts that were designed to mock my work and make fun of me. The most difficult part was learning to ignore the videos and forgive the people that created them.
It’s such a massive test of how far you have come in life when you are faced with forgiving people who may have taken your art and spat all over it.
While I’m not there yet, forgiving people who do this kind of thing is the only obvious solution. Making money brings this forgiveness game to you fast and, if you ask me, it’s a benefit!
The Subtle Ways You Can Be Helpful
The dream of sitting on a beach with money and not having to work is a fantasy. Doing nothing for the rest of your life really is a strange idea.
It’s a fantasy I once indulged in until it was a reality. And it’s not like it is on the Instagram postcards. Life on the beach, without the meaning you get from the process you indulge in to earn the money, is more of a nightmare.
What good comes from making $25,000? Bizarrely, having the opportunity to be helpful. You can use the money to be more helpful and to help more people.
You can give random gifts to people who need them. You can put extra money towards a cause you care about. You can take the life of a random reader and turn it upside down with an experience they weren’t expecting.
Money allows you to dish out surprise and delight in larger portions using the resources you have created. It’s these moments that make every bit of blood, sweat, and tears that come with making $25,000 a month from writing worth it.
Parting Thought
If you have always wanted to earn money as a writer or by creating something made for the internet, there are a few things to consider.
Is the money really what you are seeking?
What will you do with the money?
Will money really change your life the way you think it will?
Making money online won’t change your life as much as you think it will and it certainly won’t make you endlessly happy.
Making $25,000 in a month will allow you the opportunity to forgive others, help more people, and create surprise and delight moments for people you meet — and that’s the best thing about the whole process.
