Don’t Settle for Writing Like Everyone Else
How to Write More Uniquely
Everyone in their life has heard the words “Oh, you’re so original.”

But what does that even mean? It’s difficult to be original when we look up to people who’ve already published over 100 books and have become household names. That doesn’t mean you need a long list of qualifications or a master’s degree in creative writing before you can start being yourself and your own brand. Like everything else, with practice comes mastery.
Less of a Cliché Writer and More Free
If you want to make your life better, the power is entirely in your hands.
I’m not talking about making small changes that won’t take much effort on your part. It’s time to take on a big change of your own; It’s time to make your life the best that it can be.
You may think you don’t have the resources or the energy to do such a thing. But that’s really only because you’re stuck in the stasis of writing like everyone else.
Instead of letting it control you, you have to learn how to control it and take charge. You have to take that first step toward writing more uniquely.
It’s almost the end of January, everyone on Medium is looking at their readership and story performance, trying to understand what works, what doesn’t, and how to improve.
And even though I’m new to Medium, I’ve learned a lot by reading what people say, how they say it, and what they put on the page.
I’ve started looking at the stats. I’ve taken on a week-long challenge to get in a flow and push some more stories out. I’ve been writing more, getting better at it, and feeling good about the work I do. Before, I was just taking short breaks from writing. I wasn’t enjoying it, but I wanted to continue along the path of being an author.
I started looking at a couple of articles on writing tips people cite. I’ve tried to listen to what they say, but it hasn’t clicked yet, and I didn’t feel like it was my best writing. In many ways, I just feel like I’m struggling through my writing process. I’m not sure where the ideas are coming from, or how to let them be more transparent so that more people can enjoy my work.
So, I thought I’d write an article to help you get started because, in the middle of January, I’m still searching for my voice. That’s the point where it hits. You stop looking for your writing voice and start finding it instead.
You feel like you can do more, that you have more stories to tell. It’s a real feeling of accomplishment that makes you want to keep on going and keep on writing.
Like I said before, I’m not an author with a big audience like a lot of the people on Medium. But what I do have are hundreds of loyal readers and more recently, followers. That’s a whole different world.
It’s natural to feel like you don’t have the time or the energy to write. Or even worse… you can’t write at all.
But every writer starts somewhere, everyone has their own experience when they start writing and figure out how to be a professional writer. And I’m sure many of the readers who follow me around here on Medium would say that I still have a long way to go before I reach my ‘goal’.
Prosperity Is Earned Through Hard Work, Not Handed To You
As long as you’re willing to learn and work, you can be successful at it. And the same applies to writing. So, don’t worry if you’re not a professional writer with a big audience yet. It’s not about where you are now, it’s about what you do next that matters.
I’ve learned a lot from my interactions on Medium, and one truth I’ve discovered is that people want to learn from other people who are more experienced than they are in certain fields.
So if you’re not a professional writer, don’t worry about it. Just write for yourself and write for other people in your field. Share your work with them and see how they react to it.
Part of being a writer is learning what resonates with your audience and why. Find out who you want to connect with, and make them part of your writing process as well. Now that I’m thinking about it, I’m writing more on Medium because that’s where it’s at right now. So I’m trying to take something useful from every little interaction I have on the site.
That’s what it means to be a writer, and that’s what it means to put your best work forward into the world. It’s empowering to write for other people and earn their respect through your writing. But more importantly, it’s rewarding too. When you feel this way about your writing, you’ll want to keep doing what you love until there’s nothing left for you in that career path.
So, what do you have to do next to find your voice? Well, I’ve learned that people want to hear it. But they want to hear it a different way.
I’ve also learned that people want to learn something new and interesting every day. And they want to be pleasantly surprised as well as amused by what you’re doing and sharing with them.
Today’s article is about making your life better. This isn’t about changing something you have to do to make your life better, it’s about making something that you love into a daily habit so that it becomes a part of your everyday life.
So here’s what I’m going to tell you;
My secret to not only making my life good but also my writing good is this: all of the work I do for my writing gets done, no matter how small or big it is. So I make sure that I don’t waste any time getting started with my writing.
Prosperity is earned through hard work, not handed to you. But if you’re willing to learn from your experiences and listen to what people tell you, then it will be easier for you to find your way through the days and weeks of your life; one day at a time.
