Writing From the Current Headlines

Truth is often stranger than fiction. The titles of the headlines are our everyday notification about what is going on in the world around us. What is in the news, it can be mind-stretching.

These headlines by themselves can give you a place to start to write, or you can take all or part of the events and weave them into your stories or characters’ actions and see what you can create as a story line.

It is easier sometimes to build on bits and pieces than to start from scratch with a blank paper or page, so give it a try and see if this might be a way to get your writing juices started.

Sometimes, start with just the title and try to build a story out of just that much. Then try to take the title and some of the events and mix them into your story. Later try to take all of the content and see if you can build on it or add to or expand your story lines.

It might surprise you how much of the content in the news around us shows up in the content of what we are writing about currently, so see if you can spice up your material by adding some extra events or details.

These approaches can help you build your writing muscles. I find that I often wonder how in the world that person got in that situation or have that event happen to them or get through what happened to them. I can create a different story by changing what happened in different ways that might have occurred.

Another way is to think about what might have happened if the people in the events had done different things and how the series of things might have ended differently.
