How to Write Great Fiction — Tip 8
Clueless is an Inspirational Goldmine
Was your mom or grandmother a wonderful cook? Did you look forward to mealtime each day? Did you anticipate your next meal? Did you tell everyone that your mom was the best cook ever?
I hope there was someone like that in your life. Now, answer this question. Did your mom graduate from a local culinary school or the prestigious Cordon Bleu in Paris? Probably not. Did that matter to you as a child? Does it matter to you as an adult when your mom invites you for Sunday dinner?
What is my point?
Fiction writers write fiction
Great fiction writers create stories others love to read.
Like a great cook, we don’t care about their credentials, we only care about the smell and taste of the food they prepare. In this case, the unforgettable story they write.
One of my own definitions for fiction is Clueless Imagination. I love that definition because it gives me a license to go forth and create all the necessary stuff for my next story without restrictions.
There is no master set of rules, techniques, or recipes that will make you a perfect writer. Why? Simply because you're not writing about concrete reality. You're making up stuff as you go. Weird stuff, funny stuff, scary stuff, amazing stuff, but all original storytelling.
From your youth up, you’ve probably been entertained by ‘STUFF’ other writers dreamed up and put to paper. For me, Neverland, Middle Earth, and the bridge of the Starship Enterprise were some of my favorites.
The writers of those storylines had never been to Neverland, Middle Earth, or taken a flight on the Enterprise. But I have those wonderful stories because they just cluelessly sat down and made up stuff like plotlines, settings, characters, motivations, conflicts, etc. They wove all those elements together and built worlds that millions of readers have enjoyed.
The Point is
Fiction writers must always write what they want to write without letting the standards of others kill their creativity and originality. No two people have the same imagination. Only you can write the story taking shape in yours.
