How to Write Great Fiction — Tip 11
Ride the wave as long as possible

It doesn’t come easily. It doesn’t come often enough. We love it but we can’t seem to own it. What is it? The rare occasion when a story idea accompanied with the right words moves under you like the perfect wave.
You type as fast as you can for fear the wave will end. For us writers, these waves sometimes last for minutes, hours, or even days. But for however long they do last, never sacrifice the moment to unnecessary distractions.
Have an alert system in place for these moments to let those who need to know that you’ll be unavailable until further notice. Pin a sign on your door, or better yet, lock it. Turn off all electronic devices. Yes! that means your phone.
DON’T stop to edit. A surfer doesn’t stop mid-wave to check the wax on his board. He rides the energy of the wave to the last possible moment. We want to do the same. Write like there is no tomorrow when you’ve caught the wave and when it runs out, there is always time to edit.
