Summary

The author discusses their participation in Medium's writing challenge with a substantial prize, despite feeling constrained by the rules that limited their entry options, and shares the links to their submitted stories across four categories.

Abstract

The author of the web content reflects on their experience with Medium's writing challenge, which offered a significant monetary prize. Despite the allure of the prize, the author felt limited by the competition's rule that prohibited the submission of previously published work. This restriction impacted the author's choices since they had a portfolio of stories on other platforms like Vocal Media and Amazon Kindle that they believed stood a better chance of winning. Nevertheless, the author submitted entries in each of the four categories and acknowledges that the success of their stories is not solely determined by winning the challenge, as they are now generating some income. The author's submissions cover a range of topics, including adaptability in work and life, personal reflections on death, the concept of space, and the afterlife.

Opinions

  • The author admits that the stories they entered into the challenge were not their best due to the competition's submission rules.
  • There is a hint of uncertainty regarding the potential success of the stories the author was unable to submit.
  • The author believes in the value of their work beyond the competition, as the stories are earning money post-submission.
  • The author seems to have a philosophical view on winning and losing, suggesting that financial gain is not the sole measure of success.

How To Win Even If You Lose

There is more than one way to get ahead

Like lots of my fellow writers I rose to the challenge of Medium's latest initiative with 100,000 dollars of prize money up for grabs. I have to be honest, I did not feel that the stories I entered were my best, they were the best I was allowed to submit. There was a rule that prohibited submitting anything previously published elsewhere, and since I have lots of stories on Vocal Media and Amazon Kindle, that I felt had a better chance, that narrowed my choices down somewhat.

Now that is not a way of excusing not winning as there is no way of knowing how the pieces I couldn't submit would have won anyway. Whatever, for what it's worth the links below are to the stories I did submit in each of the four categories, and because they are now earning a few pennies anyway, then I am a winner whatever the outcome of the Writers Challenge.
