Summary

Management Matters is a publication seeking practical, work-related advice and personal experiences specifically tailored for frontline and middle managers, with a focus on tactical guidance, personal "how-to's," and lessons learned from mistakes.

Abstract

Management Matters aims to fill the gap in management advice by providing content that addresses the daily challenges faced by frontline and middle managers. The publication encourages submissions that offer actionable tips, personal anecdotes, and reflections on management errors. Contributors are advised to submit drafts for scheduling, include a compelling feature image with proper credits, craft non-clickbait headlines with detailed subtitles, and write in an internet-friendly format with short paragraphs and ample white space. Authors are also allowed to promote their personal projects at the article's end, with a response to submissions expected within three days to a week. To contribute, potential writers must comment on the publication's article, after which they can submit drafts for review.

Opinions

  • The publication emphasizes the need for advice that is directly applicable to the daily work of frontline and middle managers, rather than high-level strategic advice for top executives.
  • There is a strong interest in stories that detail personal management experiences, including both successes and failures.
  • Contributors are encouraged to be reflective and honest about their management challenges and learning moments.
  • The editorial process includes reviewing drafts to optimize publication timing and viewership.
  • Visual elements, such as a strong feature image, are considered important for reader engagement.
  • Writing style should be concise and formatted for easy online reading, acknowledging the typical browsing habits of Medium readers.
  • Self-promotion is permitted but should be done tastefully and separately from the main content of the article.
  • The publication commits to a timely response to submissions, maintaining clear communication with contributors regarding the status of their work.
  • The process for becoming a contributor involves public acknowledgment of interest, followed by a formal addition to the publication's roster of writers.

How to Submit to Management Matters

What we’re looking for, and how to contribute.

Welcome to Management Matters! We are bringing management and leadership advice to where it matters most — frontline and middle management.

Let’s face it, there’s plenty of advice out there for the C-suite. What’s missing is good, tactical advice for frontline and mid-level managers. Advice aimed directly at where the work gets done. Frontline and middle managers don’t need to read about leading an organization through crisis. They need to read about how to help their employees navigate the daily work and personal challenges that the latest crisis is imposing on them.

Frontline and middle managers don’t need to read about how to establish a company vision. They need to read about how to translate leadership’s vision into the daily work that their teams are doing.

THIS is the advice and guidance that Management Matters exists to provide.

Would you like to contribute? Please read the submission guidelines below — instructions for being added as a contributor follow all of that.

Management Matters Submission Guidelines

  1. We’ll consider anything work-related, but are especially interested in tactical advice and guidance aimed directly at frontline and middle managers. Personal “how-to’s” are welcome and encouraged. As a first-time manager, how did you connect with your new team? Have you ever had to manage friends? How did you do it? Is it ok to hang out after work with your direct reports?
  2. We also love “here’s what I did wrong” stories. Mess something up? Great! Tell us about it. We’re just as interested in your story about what you’d do differently as we are in your Superhero Manager stories. :)
  3. Please submit your work as a draft. This allows MM editors to work your piece into our publication schedule at the optimal time. This gets you more views.
  4. Include a strong feature image. Credit the image appropriately, and please make sure you have the rights to use it. We love Unsplash and Pexels, but there are plenty of places to get free Medium-friendly images.
  5. Please give your piece a non-clickbait headline, and include a subtitle that gives a little more detail. We prefer title case for headlines and sentence case for subtitles. Please place your feature image immediately beneath the subtitle. See the example below for how we prefer title / subtitle / image to appear:

6. Make sure your writing is internet friendly. 4–8 minutes is an ideal read time range. Use short paragraphs with lots of white space. Medium readers tend to be scrollers / scanners / skimmers, and long blocks of text are likely to be skipped right over. For more on this, see the article below:

7. Feel free to promote your book, consulting services, etc. at the end of your article. Use a section break to set this apart from the main body of your article, and use italicized text for this. Please keep it short, simple, and discrete.

8. We will generally respond to your submission within 3 days, but could take up to one week. We will leave a note on your submission once reviewed, to let you know when it will be published or why it has been rejected.

To be added as a contributor, please leave a comment on this article along the lines of “I’d love to contribute to your outstanding publication.” :) We sift through these comments and add new writers once per week.

Once you’re added as a contributor, you can start submitting your drafts.

Happy writing! We’re looking forward to reading your work.
