7 Effective Ways to Strengthen Your Stamina

How you start is important, but it is how you finish that counts. In the race for success, speed is less important than stamina. The sticker outlasts the sprinter. — B. C. Forbes

Starting projects, businesses and ideas, in general, is fun, concluding, however, can be quite tough sometimes. When we start new projects, no matter if that’s writing a 1,000 words article or a new business idea, we are enthusiastic. We are excited, we have a vision, and we feel as if nothing could hold us back from making that dream a reality.

However, over time, this excitement often drops. Finalizing a project, an article, a business deal, or whatsoever is the hardest part. Yet, that’s the only thing that matters.

Having ideas is nice, but that’s it. If you can’t conclude your ideas, they are not worth much and they don’t bring any outcome either.

Successful people are not those with great ideas but those who stick to them. Any successful person, no matter if an entrepreneur, writer, sportsperson, lawyer, or corporate CEO, faced challenges on his path to success. Yet, they kept moving forward despite the setbacks.

Their perseverance was stronger than their excuses.

A lack of stamina can have many reasons, yet, there are effective ways of being stronger than your excuses.

To maintain success, stamina is more important than talent. You have to learn to be a marathon runner.

— Joan Rivers

1. Accept setbacks

The first step to deal with setbacks is to actually accept them.

We are not aiming to eliminate difficulties, instead, we are looking for ways to keep going despite them.

Success without failing is almost impossible. Without setbacks, you might not be able to learn valuable lessons.

Every highly successful person faced difficulties on his way to success.

Steve Jobs got fired from his own company.

Thomas Edison had about 1,000 failed attempts before the invention of the light bulb.

Walt Disney was fired from the Kansas City Star because his editor felt he lacked imagination and had no good ideas.

Michael Jordan was cut from his high school basketball team.

Instead of addressing reproaches to yourself and wondering why you might have failed, accept the situation, and keep going. Learn your lessons, but don’t let a setback hold you back from taking even more action at the next attempt.

2. Look for the positive

Even if you face negative situations, look for the benefits and the valuable lessons that you can take.

If we really want to, we can find the good even in the worst circumstances. We can learn the most from setbacks and failures if we are open to it. Instead of focusing on the negative and dealing with the failure itself for too long, try to get your lessons and see them as a blessing. Take notes on what you could have done differently and be grateful for the lessons that you learned.

If you are open to learning and growing, failure can be a great opportunity to do so. By taking valuable lessons from your mistakes, you can strengthen your perseverance and keep going without hesitation.

3. Visualize your long-term goals

If you feel like giving up, visualize your long-term dreams and goals. How do you want to live and feel in five, ten, or twenty years? Is giving up going to serve that life or rather ruin it?

Reminding yourself of your long-term vision is a powerful way of strengthening your stamina.

Whenever I feel like giving up, I put out my vision board and take some time to reflect on it. By doing so, I realize that I don’t want to give up but rather give my best to create the life of my dreams.

4. Take care of your body language

Our body language has a massive impact on how we feel and what message we send out to our fellows.

If you make yourself small, you will feel weak.

If you, however, sit straight, get into a power pose, and strengthen your whole posture, you will feel much more powerful and productive.

Whenever you feel like giving up, take care of your body language. If you find yourself in a weak position, get up, stretch, do a few push-ups and empower yourself on the outside.

Perseverance is the hard work you do after you get tired of doing the hard work you already did.

— Newt Gingrich

5. Reward yourself

While working towards a vast, long-term goal, motivating yourself and persevering can be quite hard. The easiest way to keep your level of motivation high is by rewarding yourself for achieving little steps. No matter how big your goals are, break them down into little, achievable steps that are easy to follow.

Small rewards for little sub-goals can keep your stamina high and help you to get through harder times even if you don’t feel thoroughly excited.

These rewards don’t have to be big, just make sure to do something that makes you happy. For instance, an hour of self-care can sometimes make a huge difference and be everything that you needed in order to recharge.

Great things never come from comfort zones, and if you are after significant achievements, working hard might be a requirement, yet, make sure to take care of yourself. Celebrate small wins and appreciate your accomplishments regularly.

6. Surround yourself with the right people

Your environment has a massive impact on your motivation and success. If you are surrounded by people who easily give up, you will have a hard time sticking to your goals.

If you are, however, around people who also aim high and make you accountable for their own successes, persevering becomes easier.

Make sure to surround yourself with high-energy people who support you and sometimes kick you in your ass when you feel like giving up.

Additionally, also take care of which content you mainly consume. Listening to uplifting videos, reading motivational books and having powerful quotes all over your place is certainly different than listening to all the bad news happening around the world.

7. Reflect on your goals

If you have low stamina over a long period and none of the tips above help, you might want to reflect on your goals. Sometimes, a lack of perseverance means that we are working towards the wrong goals. That’s hard to admit, yet, it is way better to adapt your goals, than working on something that doesn’t fulfil you.

Even if you are working on the right things, having too big or too small goals might make it hard to keep your motivation high.

Goals that are too big might seem unachievable and thus lower your stamina, small goals, however, might seem too unattractive.

Ask yourself if your goals are really what you desire. If not, take some time and reflect on the big vision of your life. What’s the long-term picture you have in mind?

Set your goals accordingly, and make sure to remind yourself of them regularly.

You aren’t going to find anybody that’s going to be successful without making a sacrifice and without perseverance.
