How to Stay Positive in Difficult Times
It’s not easy but we can get through this together
When I decided to make 2020 my most positive year yet, I didn’t have even an inkling of what was to come.
When I compiled my list of 366 positive words, one for every day of 2020, I didn’t realize how much I’d need each word to help me through difficult days.
Even when I wrote Positive Words and Plans for March at the beginning of this month, I had no idea what was the come in the next few weeks.
Recently, I’ve been struck by the relevancy of each day’s positive word, which I chose at random at the end of 2019.
Safe
“Safe” was the positive word for last Friday, a day when the world suddenly seemed unsafe. A day when many countries were announcing travel bans or restrictions, and closures of schools, cafes and bars. A day when Spain followed Italy into lock-down.
Agreement
“Agreement” was the word for last Sunday — a day when many people were panic-buying. What a day to remember to agree with others, not fight over toilet paper and to only buy what you need, leaving enough for others.
Believe
Yesterday’s positive word was “believe”. Again, so relevant in the circumstances, when it’s so easy to feel afraid or panic. I kept returning to this word in my mind when I started to think about everything that’s happening with the Coronavirus. Just the word itself feels reassuring somehow.
Believe that we’ll get through this. Believe everything will be OK. Believe some good things will come out of this crisis.
Freedom
Today’s positive word is “freedom”. Under normal circumstances, I would have been thinking about freedom in a different way. Now I’m wondering: “How can we be free if our freedom to go out is restricted?”
If our physical freedom is limited, we’ll need to seek freedom in our minds — freedom from fear and panic. Not an easy thing to do, but an essential one, especially if we’ll all end up inside our homes for weeks.
Being kind to ourselves and spending some time alone, journaling, meditating or practicing yoga can help us feel better and free us from worry and fear.
How Can We Stay Positive During the Covid-19 Pandemic?
I’ve been struggling to write this post on staying positive during the Covid-19 pandemic. It has been difficult to write, because, deep down, I am worried. I’m trying to stay positive, focusing on positive words, quotes and affirmations, but sometimes fear creeps in.
I’ve looked back to the most difficult times of my life and thought of how I’ve survived them. Some of the things I did were:
- Taking things one day at a time — trying not to worry about what may or may not happen tomorrow, next week or next year
- Believing that all would work out well in the end — and it did, perhaps not in the ways I expected but overall outcomes were positive
- Trying to come to terms with the uncertainty of the situation — accepting it for what it was
- Knowing that I couldn’t change the situation but realising that I could change my attitude to it — and this was a choice I had in every minute of every day.
These seem like good things to do now, too. I’ve also decided to limit consumption of the news. I watched the news on TV just before going to bed on Sunday and regretted it as I didn’t sleep very well. Yesterday, I watched a bit of the 7 pm news but then turned it off because it was all very negative.
I’ve decided to watch very little news from now on. If the UK is about to go into lock-down, I’m sure I’ll hear about it from someone else. Otherwise, what’s the point in filling my head with the negative consequences of this situation? I’ll just feel worse. I’ll worry more. If I start to panic, I won’t be able to think clearly.
We can get through this!
We can get through this if we do whatever we can to help ourselves and help others today, without thinking about what may happen tomorrow. Today is a gift. We are alive.
The whole world is in this together. People in Asia, Australia, Africa, North and South America and Europe are all feeling the same.
When I wrote my list of 366 positive words, I thought that this year would be similar to the last few years. I thought that the words would help me to continue to move forward with my life, that they’d help me to keep moving toward my long-term goals.
In no way did I think something like this would happen within three months. Once again, life has thrown us all a curve ball. The unexpected has happened. The completely unexpected in this case.
Let’s try to be strong. Let’s help each other. I think one of the good things to come out of this will be an increased understanding between people living in different countries around the world.
Wishing you all health and happiness amid the uncertainty. I’ll leave you with my positive word of the day: “freedom”.
