Summary

Grandma Smillew provides three strategies for Uvebruce to promote his Medium lists effectively.

Abstract

In an article titled "How To Promote Your Lists on Medium," Grandma Smillew, a seasoned marketer with a penchant for social media, offers advice to her grandson Uvebruce, a food industry writer seeking to increase engagement with his list of stories. She suggests writing a compelling rant to draw attention to his list, directly messaging subscribers with a personalized note, and leveraging social proof by asking others to promote the list. Grandma Smillew emphasizes focusing on a single list to avoid overwhelming readers and stresses the importance of having subscribers for direct engagement. She also highlights the inefficiency of self-promotion and the power of community endorsement.

Opinions

  • Self-promotion is deemed ineffective, with social proof through others' promotion being a superior strategy.
  • Engaging subscribers directly with personalized communication can enhance the visibility of one's content.
  • A focused approach, highlighting a single list, is recommended to maintain reader attention.
  • Grandma Smillew values the role of subscribers, considering them more than just readers due to their commitment to the content.
  • The article implies that creating a sense of exclusivity and appreciation for subscribers can foster a loyal readership.
  • Grandma Smillew's advice is given as a favor, suggesting a reciprocal relationship with Uvebruce, who has helped her grandson.

How To Promote Your Lists on Medium

My top three tips

Yummy like a list you would want to read — by Eric Mclean

I don’t usually give advice for free, but Uvebruce was kind enough to offer a job to my lazy grandson at one of his restaurants, so I owe him one.

Here’s his question:

Dear Grandma,

I wrote several articles about my experience in the food industry, and they usually resonate well with the readers. I created a list to help them find more of the stories they like, but nobody’s clicking on it. What should I do?

Thank you so much in advance for sharing your wisdom with me, and please accept my sauciest regards.

Uvebruce

He went a bit too far with the sauciest, but he’s a cook and a restaurant owner, so I let it go. Also, his wife is the kindest person in the world.

Anyway, here are three ways to promote your lists on Medium.

1 — Write a rant about lists on Medium

For example, “Medium Lists Are So Invisible That You Could Put One in the Middle of the Superbowl, and Still, Nobody Would Click.”

Of course, you will take your list as an example of a useless list. I know you would like to make listS and use them ALL as examples, but that would be a mistake.

You need to focus your readers’ attention on one list. They’re not able to deal with more.

2 — Send a message to your subscribers

If you don’t have subscribers, focus on getting some instead of wondering about lists.

If you have at least 10, write an unlisted story (which won’t be visible to your followers but will still be sent to your subscribers) and say something like this:

“Hello everybody, I realized my restaurant stories were quite successful with you and my other readers [subscribers, are special — they’re not just readers] and decided to create a list of my favorite ones. Here you go. Thanks for being there. It means a lot to me that you subscribed. Buon Appetito!”

3 — Ask someone to do it for you

Self-promotion is great, but it doesn’t work. Promoting others is a different and much more efficient concept. It’s called social proof.

As an example and EXCEPTIONALLY, I will promote Uvebruce’s list of “yummy stories” today.

Read at least one of them to prove me right!
