How to Offer Self-Compassion

Don’t belittle yourself and others

How to Offer Yourself CompassionPhoto by Toa Heftiba on Unsplash

“Self-compassion is nurturing yourself with all the kindness and love you would shower on someone you cherish.” — Dr. Debra L.Reble.

You’re right.

Life is complicated, but don’t belittle yourself or others. You’re human and have a future to work on. Believe in yourself, and refuse to compare yourself to others.

Let’s remind ourselves what we have and others don’t have. Also, others have something we don’t have — self-compassion.

I lost my job once.

Time was tight, and the experience was precarious and terrifying. I tagged it as being dumped — belittled. Now, it is one of the greatest lessons of my life.

1. Don’t Belittle Yourself Or Others.

I don’t belittle myself or others in any way — no jokes or humor.

When I lost my job, I struggled, questioning everything I did or didn’t do. Then I realized I wasn’t perfect, and my employer wasn’t either — self-compassion.

Gabrielle Douglas won an Olympic Gold medal in 2012. Gabby’s hair became the talking point on social media, not her Gold medal — belittling others.

It’s common for humans to belittle themselves and others. We tend to focus on what we cannot change and care less about the apparent changes or improvements we need in our lives.

What do you think?

Sure, I cannot change the length of my fingers, legs, or my height without a high heel — self-compassion.

Social media makes things more difficult for us. We want our bodies to be like the images on Instagram and push for a perfect family on Facebook. We become fixated on fake pictures of our friends and neighbors — belittling ourselves. Your pictured perfect friends have problems too!

Give yourself a break. Admire and like yourself.

Remember as always, you have something others don’t have. And others have something you don’t have — self-compassion.

How often do you place unrealistic expectations on yourself and others?

2. Enjoy Yourself and Take Care of Yourself.

Self-compassion is what we do for ourselves.

You have yourself 24/7. Take care of yourself.

I own and deal with my thoughts, feelings, and behaviors. I do things and live differently from most people around me — self-compassion.

I lost my job many years ago, and I spent days in despair. I wasted my time and energy for days doing nothing. I don’t do that anymore.

Today, I work on disappointment as it comes. Nothing good comes out of mourning for spite of milk for weeks, months, or years. My saying, I learn from everyone and everything — what to do and what not to do.

“Be patient with yourself. Self-growth is tender; it’s holy ground. There’s no greater investment.” — Stephen Covet.

You can consciously remind yourself to work hard to improve your skills. Seek help as needed, care for your health, eat properly, and exercise regularly — self-care.

Me.

I appreciate and admire others and their accomplishments, and I choose not to live others’ lifestyles. And I refuse to worship people or have their perfect photos on my cell phone or home — compassion for me and others.

Unrealistic expectations of ourselves or others can quickly steal our peace and joy. We are humans, not machines or God. Give yourself a break and enjoy your life.

Right, no one is perfect. Are you?

I’m not. I don’t join the crowd or follow other people’s perfect little world. I enjoy the quality and simple things in life, such as well-made shoe wearable for ten years, smile, joy, reading, walking, and writing — self-care.

What makes you smile?

Self-compassion is a powerful tool for your mental, emotional, and physical health. Try it!

Remember

Self-compassion works for everyone. There is no one-size-fits-all. Choose your path and work from there. Remember, you have something others don’t have, and others have things you don’t have.

Go and enjoy your fabulous life. Love and be kind to yourself and others.

Get good with your life. Help yourself grow.
