How to Not be Grumpy

Lessons from a recovering grump.

I’m a grump. Not all the time, but I often find myself inexplicably grumpy. I have to fight it or I’m an unpleasant person to be around, and it has the potential to hurt my relationships with the people I care about the most. I woke up grumpy today. I’m grumpy while I’m writing this.

I believe grumpiness is a form of anxiety. It’s just a tiny smidge of anxiety that manifests as irrational irritability. Some people might call it tension, nerves, or stress. Regardless of what we call it, it has to be dealt with or it will have a negative impact on our lives.

How do I stop being grumpy? It’s easier said than done. The first step is recognizing the feeling. I need to notice that I’m grumpy and acknowledge it. I find it helps to bluntly tell my wife, “Sorry, I’m grumpy right now”.
