How to Master Your Mornings: 7 Essential Steps to Start Your Day Right
These are the secrets that are helping me turn my business life around.
Some time back, I wrote a story about how things had gone seriously south with my business and the impending doom (ok, a bit dramatic) approaching as a result. You can read it here.
I then promised to write monthly updates for two reasons. Firstly as a bit of accountability for myself and secondly, as an opportunity for anyone to follow my journey and hopefully gain some ideas or inspiration along the way.
Anyway, I have to report, that I FAILED big time in that attempt and now find myself in an even more precarious situation due to all kinds of reasons I will not bore you with right here. Maybe in another story to act as a warning to those of you finding yourselves in a similar situation.
However, the fightback continues, or at least restarts right here, and now.
So, what was wrong with my current situation?
One of the things I am not good at is being organised and dedicating time to my business without letting distractions interfere. So, I have decided to look at some set routines I can bring into my life, starting with a morning routine to get the day off to the best start.
The way we start our mornings can have a profound impact on the rest of our day. Whether we’re a night owl or an early riser, incorporating positive habits into our morning routine can set a productive and fulfilling tone for the hours ahead.
Below I have outlined 7 things I am now trying to incorporate into my morning routine so I can start my day in the best possible way.
1. Wake Up Early
Obviously, this is the very first thing we need to do in the morning, wake up, and it is the thing I struggle with the most. I can be fully awake in the evening but come morning, my bed feels so comfortable.
So, I am trying to be in bed a little earlier, even if I don’t necessarily feel I need to be and then rising at 6am rather than 7am. I may, over time, aim for 5.30am.
I have to say, there’s something magical about the stillness of early mornings. Waking up a little earlier than usual grants us the gift of extra time — a quiet space for self-reflection, planning, or indulging in a leisurely breakfast.
By allowing ourselves this time, we can avoid the frantic rush that often accompanies a late start, setting a calm and focused atmosphere that will carry us through the day.
2. Get hydrated
After a night of rest, our bodies crave hydration. Starting our day with a tall glass of water can kickstart our metabolism, aid digestion, and boost our energy levels. This simple act will not only refresh our bodies but also kickstart our mental faculties, helping us feel more awake and alert. Yep, I need that.
3. Mindfulness or Meditation
I don’t know about you, but I often find my mind racing along at 100mph, especially under the pressure I currently find myself in. Finding time to take a few minutes to practice mindfulness or meditation can really help to calm the mind and alleviate stress.
One of my favourite books is: “The Power of Now” by Eckhart Tolle.
It outlines simple techniques to bring ourselves back into the present. I found they really work quickly and can be done in a few minutes, even if out and about. I can highly recommend it.
I wrote a very short story about the book which you can find here:
4. Healthy Breakfast
It’s often said that breakfast is the most important meal of the day, and for good reason. Providing our bodies with essential nutrients fuels both our body and mind. A balanced breakfast kickstarts our metabolism, sustains our energy levels, and helps us stay focused throughout the morning.
5. Exercise
Engaging in exercise, even for a short period, releases endorphins — the “feel-good” hormones. It is also another opportunity to think and reflect. Leave those headphones at home!
This is something I did start some time back and I wrote an article about completing 10,000 steps a day and how it changed me. I have a secret for you, it was a real success for me.
The article, if you are interested is just below.
6. Plan and Prioritize
Taking a moment to plan and prioritize our tasks can prevent the feeling of being overwhelmed by the day’s demands. By setting clear goals and organizing our tasks, we’re better equipped to manage our time efficiently, ensuring a productive and satisfying day.
A word of warning here, and I know this is a trap because I have fallen into it, myself. Don’t plot and plan for so long nothing gets done. Planning alone does not work because it is NOT work!!! We have to take ACTION
7. Positive Affirmations or Gratitude
Starting our day with positivity can make a world of difference. Whether we practice positive affirmations or express gratitude for the blessings in our lives, this practice fosters a sense of optimism and contentment.
I am not good at this myself and maybe I need to find a different way. Some say journalling can be a huge help. Writing things down, especially positive things can certainly train the mind to think in a better way. I started a few years back but did not continue. I think it is time to try again.
So, that is it. Seven things I am trying to incorporate into my morning routine in order to help me be more focussed on the tasks ahead.
What are your thoughts? Do you have a morning routine you swear by or do you just go with whatever the day throws at you?
