How to Manage Too Many Notifications
They are interfering with your life!
Notifications are alerts or messages that inform you of new or important events, such as emails, messages, calls, updates, reminders, etc. Notifications can be useful and helpful, as they can keep you updated and connected with your friends, family, work, or hobbies. They could also be very critical, time-sensitive and security-related, like when you get a notification for a transaction that you didn’t authorise. However, notifications can also be annoying and distracting, as they can interrupt your focus and attention, and make you feel overwhelmed and stressed.
If you are receiving too many notifications, you may want to manage them better, so that you can enjoy the benefits of notifications, without suffering from the drawbacks. Here are some tips on how to manage too many notifications:
- Prioritise your notifications: Not all notifications are equally important or urgent. Some notifications may require your immediate attention or action, while others may not. Therefore, you should prioritise your notifications, based on their relevance, significance, and timeliness. You can use different sounds, colours, or icons, to distinguish between high-priority and low-priority notifications, or you can group or categorise your notifications, based on their type, source, or topic.
- Customise your notification settings: Most apps and devices allow you to customise your notification settings so that you can control when, where, and how you receive notifications. You can adjust your notification settings, based on your preferences, needs, and situations. For example, you can turn off or mute notifications for certain apps or contacts, or you can set a schedule or a mode, to receive notifications only at certain times or places, or you can choose the format or the content, of your notifications, such as sound, vibration, banner, badge, etc.
- Declutter your notification centre: Your notification centre is where you can see all your notifications, in one place. However, if you have too many notifications, your notification centre can become cluttered and messy, and you may miss or forget some important notifications. Therefore, you should declutter your notification center, by deleting or clearing the notifications that you have already seen or dealt with, or by archiving or saving the notifications that you want to keep or revisit later.
- Take a break from notifications: Sometimes, you may need to take a break from notifications, to focus on your work, or to relax and unwind. You can do this, by turning on the do not disturb mode, or the airplane mode, on your device, which will block or silence all notifications, for a period of time, or until you turn it off. You can also use apps or tools, that can help you limit or monitor your notification usage, or that can reward you for reducing or avoiding notifications.
Even though they are alerts or messages that inform you of new or important events, they can also be annoying and distracting, if you receive too many of them. So it would be best if you managed them. By doing this, you can make the most of notifications, without letting them interfere with your life.
