Creative Writing — The Stories that Your Family Remembers

Part of the time you spend with families after you are grown and out on your own is the unforgettable memories you have around stories of things that happened when growing up. These usually are shared when you are gathering for family reunions, holidays, or family visits. Along with what events are currently happening to you or have happened to you since you saw your family members last, it adds to your time together.

Most of the stories will give you a pleasant memory of your early days and the events you experienced as you were growing up. Occasionally they are not memorable events to you but were unique events to others in your family. You might have a surprise or two during the story sharing time. It can be fun to walk down memory lane together.

Others in your family can remember events about you that you do not recognize about yourself. Gather the information that would add to your memory file to share them with younger family members as they are growing up. Have the stories recorded so you can keep them with your memory books or albums.

I remember my grandparents and my other siblings’ details can add in additional events to make the family history richer. That notable expansion of the information makes the family history have more value, used to complete how the circumstances of their lives unfolded. It fills in the spaces in the telling of the family history when all share what they remembered.

If you heard “when I was a boy …… or when I was a girl…..” be sure to include those times too so you can marvel at the changes they experienced in their lives. For example, my grandfather went from horse and buggies to the first successful trip to the moon. He shared many changes in his life and how valuable his perspective to life in general added to the family history.

I have often enjoyed photos that my other siblings have that somehow I missed getting into my scrapbooks and albums. Once in a while, I add to mine by having copies made of their pictures. The stories are always placed by the new images to explain the events that surrounded that particular picture, what we were doing, why we took those pictures, and what we remembered most about the time we spent together.

Remember the many enjoyable hours together. When you are back home your stories can be shared, so be sure you take the opportunity to write about your family events, gatherings, and the joys you share. The closer to the event the story is written, the more accurate you can be recording the details.
