How to make money on Medium with no followers — Here’s how
No clients and no products needed either
There are many ways you can monetize your Medium account outside of the Medium Partner Program. I’m going to show you how to do it with a brand new Medium account, no followers, no clients, and no products.
This is how…
Get into affiliate marketing
Before you roll your eyes, let me explain.
Affiliate marketing is an easy, passive way to make money with content.
You write your article creating value-adding content, insert appropriate affiliate links, and make money.
You can do this with a brand new Medium account and no followers are required.
Can you really do this with no followers?
Yes, 100%.
Let me explain…
Now, if you have followers on your Medium account, that’s great. And, that can help but, it’s not needed, even if you want to make a full-time income with Medium affiliate marketing.
You’re not going to focus on your Medium followers to get views on your content, your focus will be to get traffic from Google.
As I look at my Ahrefs Chrome extension now, it’s showing me that Medium is ranked 95 out of 100 for domain authority.

That’s an incredibly high score.
That means that Medium content that’s keyword-ranked and hits Google might be more likely to be seen and ranked than 95% of the competition.
This domain authority score is so hard to get on a personal website or blog.
My own part-time blog I’ve been growing for the past two years doesn’t even have over a 30 domain authority score!
Use this to your advantage to rank for keywords that your audience is searching for. The idea is, that they search for stuff on Google, your Medium article comes up on the first page of search results, they read your article, click your affiliate link, and take action, earning you a commission.
That’s how it works.
And, this is how you can do it.
The proof
First, here’s some proof…

This is one of my affiliate accounts. It makes me around $50/month.
Small potatoes, I know but, it’s one of many affiliate programs I’m in that helps me make money passively each month.
These earnings are coming from the content I publish online including my faceless Medium account (yes, I have more than one Medium account..I have 3 actually).
To earn this income, I talk about an affiliate product in my Medium articles. That’s it.
4 Steps to Getting Started with Medium Affiliate Marketing
Here’s what you’ll do…
- Set up a Medium account
- Pick a niche
- Join affiliate programs
- Write
Step 1. Set up a Medium account
You can use your existing Medium account or set up a new Medium account, or both. Your choice.
I like the idea of niched Medium accounts so I have three different ones.
There’s this account that I’m writing from which I use for mostly money content, side hustles, business and entrepreneurship, my business case studies, and a few lifestyle topics.
My second Medium account is all about software reviews.
My third Medium account is for writers and writing-based topics.
Step 2. Pick a niche
I shared my niches above.
Go with any topic you’re passionate about but, keep in mind that you will be doing affiliate marketing and you will need affiliate programs to join in your niche.
So, do a little light research to make sure there are affiliate products you can refer to within your niche before making your final decision here.
Step 3. Join affiliate programs
How to join affiliate programs?
- Join from the company site or,
- Join an affiliate network
First, you can join affiliate programs directly from the company website.
For example, Bluehost has an affiliate program you can join from their site…

It’s in the footer of the site, which is where I can usually find affiliate programs to sign up.
And then this is their affiliate signup page…

Next, join affiliate networks.
There are affiliate networks you can join. These are like marketplace sites that host thousands of different affiliate programs in various niches. You just join the site by registering, getting approved, and then applying to get approved for the individual affiliate programs you want to promote.
Here’s an example:
Register to join Shareasale affiliate network.
Get approved for Shareasale.
Then, search for affiliate programs in your niche, like WPEngine, for example.
Lastly, apply to promote WPEngine (or whatever affiliate you choose) for approval.
Once you’re approved with the affiliate, you will get your affiliate links and other info like keywords, data feeds, etc. And you can start promoting those affiliate links.
Here are some examples of affiliate networks:
There are affiliate programs that pay you one-time, on a recurring basis, pay you for the sale, and pay you for the lead.
For example, I’m in one affiliate program that pays me $5 per lead. If I refer customers to their site and they sign up, I get $5, regardless if they end up buying or not.
I’m also in affiliate programs that pay me recurring, every single month that the customer stays with that company. This is common with email marketing software companies like ConvertKit and other SAAS tools that bill monthly.
One of the recurring programs I’m in pays me around $8 to $18 per customer per month, for every month the customer stays a customer with them.
There are many different affiliate programs out there.
Pick the ones that are a good fit for your content and your audience.
Step 4. Write
Now, it’s time to start writing.
Writing as much or as little as you want and refer affiliates in the content you publish.
Be authentic.
Provide value in your writing.
Don’t be spammy or overly salesy.
Medium does allow affiliate marketing but, they keep the reader in mind at all times so you want to make sure you are writing excellent content above all and insert affiliate links that make sense, where appropriate.
And, don’t forget to disclose. That means write a disclosure in your article that you have affiliate links. It can be something like: “This article contains affiliate links.”
There are affiliate marketers making $3,000 to $8,000+ publishing on Medium.
It can be done.
Here’s an example…
While you’re waiting for search engines to start ranking your content, to get views from the Medium community, publish to publications in your niche.
This can help you start making money now from affiliate marketing, while you’re waiting for your Medium article to hit Google and other search engines.
Takeaways
If you want to make money with Medium with no followers, look at affiliate marketing. It can take time to ramp up your activity, get ranked and start making money so, be patient with this.
