A Recipe For Healthy and Tasty Homemade Burgers

Who doesn't love burgers? Here’s how to make amazing burgers at home.

Most of us love burgers… Wouldn’t it be great if you could eat burgers more often?

The good news is that you can — you just make them healthier and lower in calories. This is something that I do at home regularly.

If you’d like to learn how to make amazing home-made burgers that won’t

Ingredients

Amazing homemade burgers obviously start the ingredients.

Oh, and knowing your way around a kitchen is helpful!

All of the ingredients for the burger can be picked up in your local supermarket or grocery store.

  • Premium beef patties (<20% fat)
  • Cheese
  • Baby spinach
  • Red onion
  • Hen’s egg
  • Carrot
  • Canned beetroot
  • Margarine
  • Low-fat mayonnaise
  • Dijonnaise

Cooking Process

Creating the world’s best homemade burger starts with the patty.

I like to quickly brown the patty in the pan on high before chucking it into the oven. I use thick and juicy patties from frozen. So, they take a little while.

Preheat the oven to about 180 degrees C.

Next, I cut the bun in half and lightly spread margarine. Turn the oven to grill and leave the buns in for a minute or two until slightly browning and crispy.

Slice the cheese and add it on top of the burger patty. Don’t overdo the cheese!

It doesn’t matter what cheese you use — use whatever tickles your fancy. I use the Edam in the fridge, or it might be cheddar occasionally.

Put the cheese on the burger patty, and put into the oven on low heat (around 100 degrees C) until everything else is ready.

Then I fry an egg after a quick rinse of the pan I cooked the burger patty on.

Add mayo and dijonnaise to both buns and tomato sauce on the bottom bun.

Next, ready the vegetables — grate some carrot, slice some red onion, a tin of sliced beetroot and a bag of baby spinach.

Whatever salads you don’t eat, you can have as a side. So be generous!

Take the patty out of the oven, placing it on the bottom bun. I add another thin layer of tomato sauce before placing the egg on the melted cheese and patty.

Add the salads, and there you go!

Delicimo!

Calories

To help manage our weight, many of us are very conscious of how many calories we consume. And if I promise a healthy burger, I better have some evidence, right!?

A significant difference maker in the number of calories is the burger patty.

These can vary majorly in terms of quality and, therefore, calories.

I aim for a patty with around 15-25 grams of protein, fewer than 5 grams of carbs and less than 10 grams of fat.

  • Bun — 180 calories (6g protein)
  • Burger patty — 137 calories (16.5g protein)
  • Egg — 66 calories (7g protein)
  • Cheese — 50 calories (4g protein)
  • Carrot, beetroot, red onion, and baby spinach — approximately 30 calories (negligible protein)

The condiments can add another 50 to 100 calories, depending on how generous you are.

You’re looking at approximately 450 calories with 35 grams of protein. Comparatively, a Big Mac has around 500 calories with 25 grams of protein, and a Whopper has around 600 calories with 30 grams of protein.

This burger is filling on its own. I’m a big guy, but I’m satisfied after one of these burgers (for a while…).

At fewer than 500 calories and full of nutrition, it’s a good option for a quick and easy homemade meal!

Concluding Thoughts

There you have my recipe for amazingly tasty (and healthy) homemade burgers.

Due to most fast-food burgers being loaded with calories and not a lot of quality nutrition, burgers get a bad rap as a meal option.

But that doesn’t have to be the case! Burgers can be nutritious as well as tasty.

I’d love for you to give this recipe for homemade burgers a go, and then let me know your thoughts!
