How to Live in Joy
Day 10: How a simple celebration at home was the best ever!

This piece is part of a 30 day journey on how to live in joy during the month of May. Yesterday, Mother’s Day, May 10, 2020 I took the day off of writing. So, today I begin this journey again. I invite writers to join me in finding bits of joy in their days at home during this lockdown right now. We can all find ways to live in joy, even during these uncertain times. Every day I will be exploring ways to do so and I will share them with all of you.
Today is all about celebration. Yesterday I felt overjoyed to be celebrated on Mother’s Day and to celebrate my mom too. How are some ways that we can celebrate from a distance and also within our homes. In past years we would invite each other over, or we would all go out to brunch. This year was different, but my family made it so very special. I love them with all of my heart and I celebrate them every day.
Earlier in the week my husband put something on the calendar for Saturday. It said “3:30 Mystery.” I had no idea what it was. I knew that we had plans to have breakfast burritos at home on Mother’s Day this year. I had sent my mom a gift and a handmade card and we also planned a FaceTime call as well. I am so very blessed that my husband is very good at surprises and secret gifts!
To my amazing surprise he had ordered a take-out brunch from a local restaurant! I didn’t even know that was possible or even available. How sweet! How wonderful! He had found a very special way to celebrate in our home. We got to share a lovely brunch of French toast casserole with berry sauce and some amazing quiche. It was even better than a restaurant because we could all stay in pajamas and enjoy a comfortable day.
My son made me a Haiku poem that I love:
This card is for you!
Always making rhubarb pie
Happy Mother’s Day!
How sweet! I just love this joyful love of my husband and son. How lucky am I to be with them during this time! We had one of the best celebrations we had ever had, just the three of us. We enjoyed the day together, had special moments of joy in the lovely sunshine outside and took time to just be.
I had a lovely FaceTime chat with my mom and dad. We talked about gardening, take out food, farmer’s markets and more. I had sent her some lovely local tea blends and she had sent me an amazing handwoven blanket that she made herself. It was so beautiful and lovely. That time chatting together was such a beautiful gift. I appreciate so much that we can connect so well, even at a distance.
Celebrations in our home can be big or small. Celebrations can be every day. Celebrations can be in your pajamas or in your finest clothes. Celebrations bring joy in whatever circumstance we may be in. We can live in joy. We can celebrate the small moments. We can celebrate the big moments.
My most favorite moment of the day was when my son came outside to chat with me. He told me: Mom, over there by the flowers, let’s take a selfie. He rarely suggests that we take photos together. This melted my heart for sure. This brought me pure joy. This was the best gift I could ever receive.
How was your Mother’s Day? I hope that you found the very best way to celebrate that you could. I hope that you found joy in the day! I hope you found joy in your heart! I hope you found joy in your home!
With lots of love and light,
Trista
