How to Live in Joy
Day 11: How picking up sticks every day can change your perspective

Today is Day 11 of a 30 day series of pieces I am writing about living in joy. Each day is about something small I notice that brings me joy right here at home. During this month of May I am taking a close look at everything in my every day life, finding joy in every corner. I invite other writers to find joy in what they experience at home as well. We are still on lockdown here in the state of Oregon as of this writing, so we are all learning to make the most of our home life.
Today I noticed how much I have begun to like picking up sticks. In our back garden we have a large lawn with trees in the middle and also a lovely raised bed garden with vegetables and flowers. Lately it has been quite windy and so many little pieces of branches have fallen on the lawn and in the flower beds. In the afternoons I after I have finished the majority of my work in the house, I take a break and go for a walk in the garden outside.
Each day I am able to find lots of tiny little sticks and occasionally some larger branches that have fallen from our trees or neighboring trees. It is like a walking meditation to notice each stick, pick it up, gather several together and take them to our fire pit. I love to see if the stick has lichen on it, if it is bent or straight. There are so many kinds of little sticks all over the ground.
These little sticks make great kindling. It is kind of like building a large bird’s nest every day in our fire pit. When the time came to build a fire this past weekend all of these little sticks created such a beautiful fire! We all sat around it, amazed! It felt like we were on a magical island with such a beautiful fire and the stars shining above us, brightly.
These sticks have taught me a lot about abundance. Every afternoon I got out to the garden, to do my little walk. Some days I think that I won’t find many sticks, but there are always so many if you really look closely. You can look in amongst the grass, you will find a stick. You can look behind some bushes, you will find a stick. You can look around the river rocks near our fire pit, you will find a stick. It has taught me that there is more than enough, everywhere that we look, if we choose to really look at notice. If I start to have any thoughts of scarcity, I will think of all of the sticks.
What beautiful life lessons we can learn from what is all around us. In our rushed world of just 2–3 months ago, would I have noticed the sticks? I doubt that I would have. This noticing is such a practice in slowing down. Being in the moment. Noticing the tiny little sticks. Noticing the abundance. Noticing that every day more is provided. Every day we can find more. Every day we can gather more. We are always asking for more, but it is already there. Right there for us. All along.
What have you noticed today? Have you seen all of the abundance around you?
With lots of love,
Trista
