How To Get More Active Readers

My New Approach To Increase Readership

As a writer on Medium, there are two things we look for, a genuine reader base and earnings. Both of these are interconnected. For the past 2.5 months, I have been experimenting with different ways to increase readership. This ranges from reading stories I resonate with from the For You tab, to joining writer groups I get introduced to via various Social Media groups. I believe in building a long-term reader base with people genuinely interested in my content.

Below is an approach I recently implemented, and so far in terms of reader count it looks positive. Since implementation, I have had 50 reads from 78 views and had a bunch of new readers/writers I am looking forward to having a connection with.

So below is my approach.

1. Find top writers from your niche and open their latest story. This story will tend to have an active readership for the niche.
2. Go through the response section and look for meaningful comments.
3. Check these users’ profiles to see if they are non-members, regular members, or FOM. This is to check how active they are on Medium at a glance.
4. Read their content to check if it looks genuine, or AI-generated.
5. You should prefer writers with genuine stories as they are more likely to be genuine readers.
6. Pick a story you like, and leave a meaningful response to it.
7. A meaningful response to the same from them would help you to gauge if there is a potential connection.
8. Depending on the interaction they will likely visit your profile to check your content, read, and leave a meaningful comment.
9. Follow and subscribe based on the vibe you get on points 7 and 8.
10. Reap the long-term benefits of a potential reader of your content.
11. Write great content.

🌟 Bonus Tips

1. Make new writers feel welcome to the community, they tend to be more active.
2. Writers with a low follower count or one similar to you are more likely to be engaging.
3. When responding to a story prefer responding to one with fewer existing responses or older content so your read notification stands out.
4. Regularly refresh your own pinned story with older but good stories, this way new visitors will have refreshed content when they visit, and you need not write new content that often.

Above may seem like a lot of work, but to be highlighted in an ocean of amazing writers you need to take extra steps to establish your footing.

Once you have a consistent reader base you can concentrate on further improving your content for more organic growth.

This among others are ways I am experimenting to grow on Medium. This may not give you results immediately, but being consistent is bound to bear fruits.🥭🥝🍍
