How To Get 1,000 Followers As A New Writer
Turn your writing into a business
I am excited to say that I have reached over 1,000 followers on Medium in just under half a year! Thank you to all who are followed and continue to engage with my content, you’re the real MVP.
Trust me when I say, it wasn’t easy. There are days when nothing seems to be going on even when I started posting stories almost every day and sometimes even twice a day. I knew nothing about writing when I first started but as time developed, so did my writing skills. To all the aspiring writers out there who are afraid to start uploading content, don’t be. Writing more will make you better at writing and you’ll see the improvement. You can look back at some of my old articles and notice a huge difference between my writing style five months ago compared to now.
Getting followers on Medium is tough and probably one of the hardest things to accomplish. Sure, people clap for your stories and sometimes would even leave a nice response but it’s up to them if they really want to follow and keep track of your stories.
You can have an article blow up but the chances of every reader following you is extremely low. We’re all trying to do the same thing and get rewarded for our writing. There are over 50 million monthly active users on this platform and the competition is only getting harder as each day goes on with new writers constantly joining the Medium Partner Program.
Now, let’s get into my strategies and what I learned from huge writers like Zulie Rane and Sinem Günel (my personal favorites for advice on writing) to grow organically on Medium and unlock the chest to 1,000 followers.
Let’s get started…
Find a niche and be specific
As new writers start out, it’s common for them to explore and write about as many niches as possible. The most common ones are writing, business, sports, gaming, marketing, spirituality, startups, etc.
It’s perfectly okay to make a post about business marketing and then spirituality for your next post. It’s completely up to you but you have to make sure you actually know about it and have some sort of passion for the topic unless you just want to fake it until you make it.
Once you have at least 50 published articles, it’s time to niche down so you can have content for a specific audience. The best niches on Medium are advice on writing and anything involving business/social media marketing.
Luckily there are publications for just about every niche. My personal favorite pubs for new writers to submit their work and get accepted are Feedium, Illumination, SYNERGY, The Shortform, and The Side Hustle Club.
Publish at least 5 times a week
Being consistent on Medium is the most important thing you can do to grow fast and gain as many followers as possible. Even if they don’t get as many views as you were expecting, it adds up if you start posting at least five times a week.
The best thing you can do is set yourself a writing schedule and brainstorm headline and subtitle ideas. Then, you can start writing based on that headline. It’s important to research your content and occasionally provide backlinks to cite something you found during research. Not only will backlinks increase your chances of getting recognized by the algorithm, it’ll also let the readers know that you put in the time and effort and they’ll begin to think highly of you and be more legit.
Burnout will happen, it happens to everyone so make sure you value your mental health first and over your writing. Being a content creator is a tough job as you are constantly trying to please your audience.
Prioritize helping your audience
You gotta make sure your content provides value in some way, shape, or form. A lot of writers are doing the same thing as you so what can you do to make yourself stick out?
No one cares about you on this platform. The truth hurts but when someone reads a story and you just constantly talk about yourself they’ll become uninterested and go on to find other similar articles but with different authors.
That’s a reader you’ll never get back again!
Helping your readers is one of the most crucial ways to gain followers. Giving out special tips and advice that no one else has revealed will begin to make you and your content more valuable.
Takeaway
The most important thing you will hear from me, is don’t give up. Quitters achieve nothing and you’ll probably end up regretting it because Medium and the algorithm will begin to reward you with your consistency the more stories you write. It could take 100 stories for you to finally go viral or it can take 20. My point is, even when your views are down and your follower count hasn’t gone up in a while you’ll only get better from there. When people hit rock bottom the only thing that can happen from there is for their life to go up.
If your content is helping the audience solve a problem, then you’re doing your job correctly.
Once again, I want to thank you all for 1,000 followers! Expect to see more stories from me. Thank you all for reading, I hope this helped and gave you a little motivation. If it did let me know by clapping and leaving a nice response below! I appreciate your responses and I try my best to respond to every single one of them.
