How to Endure Pain As a Spiritual Being?

The only secret of eternal happiness

There was a time when I had lost all hope in life.

There was a time when I could see no light at the end of the tunnel.

There was a time when there was no silver lining.

During those seasons, the rational side of my mind asked me to quit. My body succumbed to despair, and I lost all the energy and will to continue — but then I heard a voice, and it asked me to keep going.

The voice asked me to have faith!

2020 has been an unrealistic year for me but unlike most people, what made it special was my urge to learn more about spirituality. When people were venting about the pandemic and everything wrong in our society, I did something I had never done before.

I devoured into Indian scriptures, Zen's Chinese philosophy, and read some biographies of enlightened beings.

I learned some great lessons about spirituality and kept myself positive throughout the uncertainty. In this post, I talk about the one most important lesson that I learned, and it’s the only one you need to endure through pain.

Being Spiritual

Being spiritual means that you believe in a higher power — it could be The Universe or God. When you believe in that higher power, you also need to believe in its principles and how it works.

Everything that happens in our life is properly planned and aligned with our purpose. There are no accidents or co-incident in the Universe. Remember The Adjustment Bureau?

A caterpillar may question its existence when it’s in the transition of becoming a butterfly, but that doesn't mean its life has ended or it won’t be able to the world from the sky.

“And we know that for those who love God all things work together for good, for those who are called according to his purpose.” -Romans 8:28

When Oprah Winfrey got fired from her job as a News Anchor, people thought her career was over! But little they know that the pain was momentary, and she was being set to given the opportunity of her life by giving a rather new talk show. When Oprah took over, the show became a mega-hit and ran for 25 years and made her a household name.

In the most renowned Indian scripture, The Bhagavad Gita, Lord Krishna talks about four basic types of devotees that turn towards Him. Number one on the list is the “distressed” and needs his blessing to endure pain or an obstacle. Krishna explains that He welcomes all four types that approach Him, but the one who approaches Him without any material motivation is most dear to him.

He who has faith has wisdom; Who lives in self-harmony, Whose faith is his life; And he who finds wisdom, Soon finds the peace Supreme.

– The Bhagavad Gita

But is it even possible to not have any material want or any material pain when you’re living a material life?

When you’re going through a challenging situation, know that it’s part of the plan, just like Oprah did. That’s when your character and your faith in God are tested.

The only secret of eternal happiness as a spiritual being is to compare your pain with your faith.

Is your pain bigger, or your faith in God?

If you believe in him, you have to believe in him even at your worst. Please don’t become a follower when things are going fine for you and then question his existence when something bad happens. There is a famous quote, “sometimes your plan doesn’t work out because God has better ones for you.” It suffices why we go through hardship.

Challenges are the only way to grow as a persona and as a spiritual person!

Every obstacle, every heartbreak, is either an opportunity or a detour to a better and stronger self.

Every failure is taking you in the right direction of success.

Every painful experience is taking you closer to your purpose.

“Faith is unseen but felt, faith is strength when we feel we have none, faith is hope when all seems lost.” — Catherine Pulsifer

And when you become unshakable, your pain will disappear, and only your mindset about difficult situations will change as a result :)
