How To Create Your Own Fairy Tale (In Real Life)

Cinderella, but with a twist

Fairy tales are awesome.

They are the ultimate wish fulfillment. They bring magic into our lives from an early age by simply cracking a book, watching a movie, or being read to as you gently fall asleep.

I’ve been addicted to fairy tales since I was a wee, tiny human. Does this book have “princess” or “magic” in the title? GUESS WHO’S GOING TO STAY UP READING TIL 4AM BY THE DIM, DIM GLOW OF HER NIGHTLIGHT.

C’est moi.

(My mom found me and told me I was going to wreck my eyes. Small Carrie did not care.)

Obviously, as I grew from wee-tiny to normal-tiny, being a princess in a fairy tale was my top priority in life. Example: At one point I read that princesses balanced books on their heads to practice good posture. Twenty-five years later, I can sail up and down stairs with a stack of books on my head because I practiced that hard.

But as I grew into semi-adulthood, my priorities changed.

In Which The Fairy Godmother Is A Deeply Underappreciated Character

Cinderella was a mainstay of my childhood. I dressed as her for Halloween (looking fabulous, for the record). I can practically recite the animated movie, and the live-action Cinderella with Brandy and Whitney Houston is one of my favorite comfort movies to this day.

As a child, Cinderella herself was #lifegoals in my fairy tale journey. Look amazing, marry a Prince, can we discuss the glass slippers.

However.

Cinderella is not the coolest character in that story.

Why, why, why have we all spent this time overlooking the actually magical and probably somewhat omnipotent Fairy Godmother?! Lady can poof! out of thin air and just grant people’s wishes and change their lives with a wave of her magic wand.

She’s deus ex machina personified, and I want to be her with the violent fiery passion of 10,000 suns.

Making Your Fairy Tale: How To Be The Fairy Godmother

Now, I feel that my priority transfer as I grew up from “beautiful but helpless girl who elevates her life through marriage” to “fucking nearly-omnipotent magical wizard-lady” is a sign of significant personal growth. Go me.

But as I grow up further, the question becomes “okay, so how do I go about making fairy tales real by actually being the fairy godmother?” Gotta make this shit a reality, let’s get this show on the road.

And this morning I read Liberty Forrest, Author’s Witchy interview with Jimmy Misner Jr., entitled Witchy Interviews Jimmy Misner, Jr. on Secret Clubs, Bugs Bunny Sightings, and Deranged Ostriches, and I had a brainwave.

In the interview, Witchy asked Jimmy Misner Jr. what kind of secret club he would start. And he (being an apparently fabulous human) said that he’d start a secret club for people who wanted to do good in the world but didn’t want to be all loud about it.

And my dudes, this is how I would be the Fairy Godmother.

I would copy Jimmy and start a super-secret Godmother’s Club. It would be a group of people who would meet monthly and select a Fairy Godchild for the month who needed help.

Said help might be, “my kitty needs surgery and I can’t afford it.” Said help might be, “I can’t pay my $300 property tax so I’m about to lose the home I’ve lived in for the past 30 years.” It might be, “I would love this particular prom dress and I would feel like such a princess in it but my parents can afford it” if we wanted to go super hard on the source material.

And the nifty thing is, we wouldn’t have to like, go hunting for people. If we personally knew someone who needed help like this, then awesome! Our Fairy Godchild is found. But there are infinite potential Fairy Godchildren thanks to GoFundMe or Plumfund or the other more-than-dozen fundraising websites. Boom, work done.

Becoming The Fairy Godmother

The Godmother’s Club would be my way of realizing my childhood-to-adulthood dream of actually living a fairy tale. It’s just that I wouldn’t be the recipient of the magic — I would be the Godmother herself.

And I think that’s a really awesome thing to be.
