I’ve read thousands of tips and tricks throughout my writing journey, have been coached by the best of the best, and have noticed that most articles give you surface-level information about what it means to inspire your readers through your writing.
Now, I’m not saying I’m the best inspirational writer there is, I don’t think I’m at the level of Les Brown just yet. Yes, he is a motivational speaker, you’re right, yet first, he had to write down what he speaks to his audience, right? 😉
I have some amazing tools under my belt that I’ve learned while working with millionaire coaches and studying Neuro-Linguistic Programming.
My goal is to shed light for you on the nuances, and the tiny shifts you can make in your writing journey so that you don’t just become an average writer but an outstanding, magical, motivational, and inspirational writer people crave to read or listen to.
If this sounds intriguing to you, let’s go for a ride together and explore in-depth some of the most fascinating, powerful, and yet simple shifts you can make in your writing that you’re going to love and want to use going forward.
“You Have Something Special! You Have Greatness Within You! You Can Do More Than You Can Ever Begin To Imagine!” From the Master: Mr. Les Brown
What gives me the right to write about this stuff?
I’ve been inspiring and motivating people online since 2019. My writing has touched millions of hearts and changed hundreds of lives.
I can’t tell you how many thank-you private messages I receive daily from people who, after reading my articles, stories, and social shares, have experienced transformative changes in their lives.
Recently, some of you asked me here on Medium:
“Emy, how do you write so inspirational and motivational?” or simply commented, “Emy, your energy is contagious!”
So I thought, why not share with you some of my secrets right now.
I believe inspirational writing is exactly about that powerful energy we can show to our readers with words! Notice the word “show”. I share my stories in a way that makes you feel excited! How cool is that?
That’s exactly what inspirational writing is all about and that’s exactly what you need to aim for!
Sounds good?

Your readers simply have two questions in mind:
Is this going to help me feel better about myself? Is this going to teach me something new so that I can transform my life?
Similar to a motivational speech, except we are writing for people who mostly love to read.
Keep in mind that lately, we also write for listeners as well, with all the technology available to us, people are listening to what we write, so let’s pick up that beat, and get to inspiring with full of energy and excitement!
Are you ready to find out the behind-the-scenes nuances and tiny shifts you can make in your writing so that people will fall in love with your work?
Grab a cup of coffee or tea and have a pen and paper ready. This is a long read and you want to make sure you take notes of your favourite parts so that next time you write, you’ll implement these new skills.
Let’s go! Whoohoooo! 💃
What should I do first?
No matter what’s happening in my life, I take the time to align my mindset with winning and succeeding in everything I do. Sure, we cannot always achieve the exact success we want, yet when we focus on the upsides, even failures can feel like an accomplishment.
Which means, first and foremost, you want to focus on your mindset. You won’t be able to inspire unless you’re inspired yourself.
Create a daily habit of stepping into a winning state of mind. Teach yourself to believe you can achieve the success you desire, and build so much confidence in yourself that people want to follow your lead in a heartbeat.
Imagine if I were feeling sad or frustrated while attempting to write an inspiring message for you. That would likely leave you feeling frustrated or sad, rather than excited or loving your life.
For example: “I’m so frustrated with X because now I won’t be able to do Y. I wish someone would do something about it. Then my life would be better.”
Sounds like a complaint or blame, isn’t it?
I’m not saying there is no place for this type of writing. I’m simply suggesting that it may not inspire anyone. While it may validate your readers’ feelings, it could potentially keep them in the same low emotional state they were experiencing when they began to read your work — feelings of complaining, blaming, frustration, sadness, anger, and so on.
Readers won’t be able to transform their lives after reading a story like that. It’s not an inspirational story, an inspirational story transforms your reader's state of mind.
While I do write about such feelings at times, I always make a conscious effort to make an impact with my message by sharing how I overcame those emotions and including valuable information at the end of my story. I find that I’m only able to inspire and motivate you when I’m in an inspired state of mind first.
Inspirational writing is best done, when you’re absolutely in the state of inspiration, you’re feeling that momentum of a go-getter mindset, where you feel there are no limits and you’re rocking life as it is.
Which means you have habits that put you in that ecstatic mental state day after day, ensuring a continuous source of inspiration for your writing!
You can dance, you can repeat affirmations, write in your journal, pet your cat, or take your lovely dog for a walk. Whatever works for you, in this article I won’t go too deep into this subject so that you can focus on the tips on inspirational writing. The Power of Using All-inclusive Language:
Now you might be wondering,
“What the heck is all-inclusive language?”
All-inclusive simply means that you want to include all your readers in the message you’re trying to share so that no one gets left behind.
It simply means you can make your story more relatable to people who click on your headline and are interested in that specific topic. If your read ratio is currently low, this simple trick will help you achieve a read ratio of 60% or more almost every single time.
So how do we use all-inclusive language in our stories?
Let’s look at an example and we’ll break it down together.
“Some of you reading this maybe someone who has never created an inspirational message before, some of you may have tried this with little to no success, or perhaps you’re someone who’s been writing inspirational messages for quite some time and you simply are looking for new perspectives to further your experience.”
Do you see what I just did there? I’ve included all levels of writers into this sentence from someone who has never written an inspiring piece to a seasoned writer who’s looking for nuances, which means you feel like I’m talking to you no matter what category you fall into.
How cool is that?
Most likely, you clicked on the headline to learn how to become an inspirational writer because you were interested. Now, I’ve included you in my story at the beginning of my article, and you’re joining the ride to learn and grow with everyone — hence, all-inclusive.
So let’s break this down into pieces and let’s have some fun.
The first group usually is the group without experience: Some of you are just starting, never done inspirational writing before.
The second group is someone who has already tried writing inspirationally but has yet to succeed or is looking for more ways to grow.
The third group is where some people have been successfully writing inspirationally and want more knowledge and skills under their belt.
When you list out the groups of people you want to write your article to, list them out in this order: inexperienced, experienced, close to pro.
Have I missed anyone? Maybe, yet most likely not. 😉
This means that all people who are reading this story will stay and read more because I included them in my writing so it is now related to their level and they feel like this is read is exactly what they need.
Now, this is not to trick anyone’s mind, you must use this technique with good intentions, and make sure you don’t clickbait and start talking about something completely different in your article. You’ll lose readers and most importantly, you’ll lose respect for your work and people won’t come back to read more of your stories.
Be mindful, be intentional, and embrace all inclusive language for a win-win situation that benefits both you and your readers
Do you see now how awesome ‘all-inclusive language’ is?
Including everyone who might want to read your story at the beginning of your article will lead to more reads and success for your inspirational writing.
You’ll simply have more impact to transform more lives.
To make your writing relevant to all who are curious to find out more about your story, use all-inclusive language and watch your success soar.
People don’t like to be told what to do.
When you are on a mission to inspire people, you may come across sounding like you’re telling people what to do when you simply use the word “you” in your sentences without easing the transition for your readers. You want to make this transition as easy and flowy as possible.
So what can we do to achieve this?
Step One: We begin with a story (talk more on this later) about our lives that relates to the topic we are sharing about. In this case, we use “I” in our sentences since the story is about our own experience.
For example: I used to be afraid to share my thoughts online. I was afraid of all the judgments people would have about me.
Step Two: We can transition into “we”.
For example: We can think about judgment from a different perspective. When we judge ourselves, we tend to judge others. When we love ourselves, we tend to love others. When we change the way we look at judgment, the whole writing game can change.
Did you feel the ease of those sentences? I still didn’t tell you what to do or how to do it, I simply shared my experience and then I included you, the reader, in my conversation, we became “we” and connected, as now you’re thinking about the parts of your life when you might have felt that way too.
Step Three: Now we can move on to using the word “you”. Since we eased our relationship this way, you now have an idea about what I have experienced, and including “we” meant that you can relate to my story as well. At this point, we can begin focusing on the next step “you” need to take to achieve transformation. We can now continue writing to our reader “you” in a more direct approach.
For example:
(I) — After changing my mindset about judgment, my life has completely shifted in the direction I never thought it would. People started following my work and send me thank you messages privately. So by simply changing my mindset, my writing took off.
(We) — We can look at judgment from a new perspective, and when we do that, magic happens.
(You) — You may want to take a pen and a paper, and write down everything you’re judgmental about in your own life. Keep writing until you have nothing left to say; don’t worry about how long it will take you or if you have one or 100 on your list. That doesn’t matter. What matters is that it is now out onto the paper right in front of you. By going through the list one by one, you can then focus on shifting your mindset about your judgmental topic.
Did you feel like I was telling you what to do? Or did you feel that I opened up to you, included you in my story, and then gave you some suggestions on how you can achieve what I have?
Sounds fascinating, doesn’t it?
I wonder if you’ll give it a try next time you create your inspiring story.
Share your personal stories wisely
Instead of going too deep into the exact things that happened to you in your life in chronological order, simply pick a moment in time to write about.
Most writers will lose their audience when they go into too many details about what happened in their lives, especially when no one knows who they are. Your readers’ mind simply wanders away to their problems or, worse, they get bored reading your heartfelt confessions.
Instead, you can pick a moment in time that has changed everything for you when you felt that way. The moment of your transformation.
For example: “I was sitting on my sofa on the Friday evening wiping up my tears so that my lovely daughter won’t catch me balling my eyes out. I felt like a failure with nothing to show for. She walked out of her room like she felt my pain and said to me: “Mom, you’re teaching people how to be confident, you’ll get through this one mishap in no time.” The love I felt at that moment coming from an 8-year-old is unexplainable. Like a light switch, my brain turned up the brightness, my heart felt full of joy, and I knew this moment on, that my life is going to change.”
So instead of going too deep into the negatives and explaining why I was balling my eyes out, I focus my attention on the moment of transformation. Simply pick a moment in your life when everything shifted.
Earlier in my writing career I tended to talk too much about myself in so many details that I was losing the attention of my readers. I had to learn to talk less about the details and more about moments in time that changed my life. We can inspire like this with more impact because our readers won’t get bored or skip a part of our intended message.
Action: You can begin with jotting down moments in your life that has changed the course of your life’s journey. From the earliest moments you remember up until today. List those moments one by one on paper and write a short 4–5 sentence summary of your experience in those transformational moments. Focus on that specific moment where the shift happened.
I’m sure you have many stories to share, so keep this handy, it’s like a little bible for writers like you and me. We can dig in and pick the appropriate story at any time that relates to our article’s title and simply inspire with the moments rather than bore our readers with too many details.
What do you think, will you create your personal story bible?
Use Quotes Most People Are Familiar With.
Why? Because that’s the simplest way to connect with your readers. Chances are they’ve read or heard about a quote you’re going to share.
For example: “Everything is energy and that’s all there is to it.” — Albert E. “You get in life what you have the courage to ask for.” — Oprah W.
That’s it, you got the reader’s attention simply with a quote you shared and now they feel more related to you. You most likely feel inspired by the same quotes as they do, so hey, we are friends now, I trust you.
Quotes are the easiest way to relate to your readers.
Use Metaphors to Your Advantage:
What is a metaphor?
For example: “Life is a journey” or “Love is a battlefield.”
People resonate with metaphors because they simplify complex ideas and emotions. By using metaphors that people are familiar with, you create an instant connection with your readers.
They nod their heads and think, “I get it, I’ve felt that way too.” It’s a powerful way to bridge the gap between you and your audience.
Including metaphors in your stories can help you connect with your readers on a deeper level almost instantly.
Dealing with naysayers or rude comments:
There will always be people who dislike your writing. Simply ignore them and move on. They’re not worth your energy and it’s not your job to change them. Simply move on.
Remember, your writing is not for everyone, and that’s super cool.
Keep your focus on the readers who resonate with your message and empower them so much that they’ll become your super fans and want more of your amazing inspirational writing.
Responding to negativity rarely leads to a positive outcome. Preserve your energy for creating more inspiring content and keep rocking the high vibe train.
