How The “Winner Effect” Might Change Your Entire Life
Winning breeds winning.
You’ve probably heard this saying before. But have you ever thought about it? If not, you should. It could change your life.
Let me explain why.
Winning Raises Testosterone
A victory over others, and even over yourself, can feel like a magic pill.
It’s even enough to think that you’ve won.
This was shown in a study in which 38 men in their twenties competed head-to-head in battles on rowing machines.
However, the winners were declared randomly, regardless of the actual outcome of the battle, to prove that it is the mere belief of having won or lost that leads to testosterone fluctuation and not the effort it takes to win.
The results were astonishing:
The men who believed they had won received an average testosterone increase of 4.92%, while those convinced they had lost dropped by an average of 7.24%. Overall, men who thought they were winners had testosterone levels 14.46% higher their deflated opponents.
The body quickly adapts to perceived changes in social status without altering the genetic makeup.
This phenomenon is an example of so-called plasticity.
Ceo’s Have Higher Testosterone
It’s fascinating how our brain adjusts to social status.
You can see this, for example, in the fact that people with a lot of power, such as CEOs, have very high testosterone levels.
The Winner Effect
Winning gives us a biological advantage as the study showed, which triggers a powerful cycle.
The winner effect.
You win. This increases your testosterone, which causes dopamine levels to be boosted. Dopamine plays a big role in motivation and helps us take action toward the things we want to achieve. This increases the chances of winning again and creates a spiral.
A sense of achievement can therefore create momentum that makes us a winner.
That’s why boxers fight weaker opponents before important championship fights.
Because of the winner effect, it is easier to go into such an important fight with a victory behind you.
How To Get Started?
How to apply this to your own life?
When you are in a bad situation, it is admittedly not easy to feel like a winner.
That’s why you should start small. Even small achievements are perceived as wins and can build priceless momentum in your life. One single workout, one hour of working on your business, one girl you approach.
Even these small victories trigger the described biological processes. Now you just have to use this momentum and stack one win after the other.
Eventually, the victories will get bigger.
And you become a real winner.
Winning breeds winning.
