How Not to Depend on a Job and have your Freedom

Without a shadow of a doubt, coronavirus has sent the world back.

It made us all sit and hopefully reflect.

Some of us have lost jobs. Some of us found new jobs.

Luckily, I don’t depend on the job. My husband and I worked hard to be free from working for the man. While the virus situation doesn’t affect our “jobs” we have been affected in other areas because of it.

We cannot just get on the plane anymore. Who would want to right now? Our lives haven’t really changed much since the deadly virus hit the world. Only one thing, we cannot go anywhere we like.

We need to have a justification for leaving the house. With that, we can live. I am grateful we only have to deal with this. I am grateful all our family is healthy.

Fear of losing “the safety net”

Others might have a fear of losing a job. It’s stressful. I have been there not because of the virus. However, losing a job doesn’t matter the reason. The fact remains the job is lost. I was once where I completely depended on the job.

My livelihood depended on it. If I didn’t have a job I couldn’t pay my rent. I couldn’t buy food. I had to have a job. It’s a terrible existence when the job is something I had to trust. In truth, I couldn’t rely on it. I was made redundant.

It was a massive shock to the system. My neighbour has lost her job due to coronavirus. She is out of work for at least a year. Her industry is tourism in Spain. She had to ask the government for help to pay her monthly mortgage.

It’s hard to find yourself in a place where everything you have suddenly is gone. It’s a strange feeling. You don’t know what to do. The best way not to be dependent on the job is to have transferrable skills or learn new skills.

Learning Something New

Learning a new skill is not always easy.

Wanting to change your job is not always easy. Some people have children. Some have established careers for over a decade — change might be a bit too much. However, as Tim Denning said in You Still have a job. Will you Keep it? :

‘But all of us can build something small that is all ours, which can’t be taken away. All of us can diversify away from having one company pay our bills and put friend noodles on the table.’

No one should put all their eggs in one basket! You’ve got to be able to live free from fear of losing a job. A job shouldn’t be all your life like it used to be for me.

It hurts a lot more when you lose it. I’ve been there. It’s been 5 years since I have been made redundant and I still think about that day!

How not to be dependent on the job…? Gary Vaynerchuk suggests starting a business on the side. Some suggest investing in a bitcoin. Some suggest investing in something. I say learn new skills such as:

Coding

Coding is a cool skill to have. Not cool as in look at me I am so amazing. But in the way, you can design things out of nowhere into something pretty like a new website.

You can create new apps. You can create pretty much anything you like. Coding is for everyone, for every age and accessible online. I love coding.

It’s a skill that will put a smile on your face and give you cash. Coding can allow you to pursue your dream projects. Coding opens so many opportunities for you.

Maybe I am biased because I am learning to code myself but what it gives me is a lot of achievement. It makes me feel so good after I’ve done a few lines of coding. It’s great to teach children, young, old, and everyone!

Sewing

Sew your own clothes. Start selling what you sew. Anything made with hands is an amazing skill. I am sewing my own dresses and I love it.

I can choose all the colours, the materials I like and make something spectacular at the end of it. Choosing fabrics is wonderful. I get to touch it feel and imagine a new something…

Sewing is a great skill. I want to create my own clothing design business. I want to sell my clothes on the website I create.

Sewing can be a side hobby and it can become a business. You don’t have to depend on working for the man.

Become a builder

Builders are those who drive the most expensive cars at least in London. They are the ones with cash.

My husband and I did a project in London we transformed a house into a beautiful place. We found out builders earn real cash.

If you think about it, how much does the cement cost? How much do the bricks cost? A lot of cash goes straight into a builder’s pockets.

Learn a new skill as a hobby that could end up as a business later is a great idea. It gives you freedom. You don’t have to fear being dependent on the job anymore. You’ve got plan B.

You can sleep better at night because you know you have it all covered. You don’t have to be the best at your job anymore. By learning a new skill you’ll gain something else, you’ll become fearless in your job. You’ll able to say what you think and not care.

If there was freedom this is it. It’s when you don’t have to depend on the job and feel free. No one can stop you from being your true amazing self.
