Summary

The article discusses the impact of a two-month writing hiatus on a writer's Medium statistics, detailing the subsequent decline in views and earnings and the author's strategy to recover and improve their metrics.

Abstract

The author of the article shares their personal experience with a significant reduction in writing activity on Medium, going from 18-25 stories per month to just 3 in December. Despite Medium's passive income model supporting their analytics for a month and a half, there was a noticeable 50% drop in stats after the two-month period. Previously, the author enjoyed over 50 views and more than a dollar in earnings daily, which decreased to 20-30 views and 30-40 cents. To address this decline, the author took on an intensive writing challenge, writing for 8 hours a day, which successfully stabilized and slightly increased their views and earnings. The article also encourages readers to join Medium's membership program, highlighting its affordability.

Opinions

  • Medium's platform rewards consistent content creation and penalizes prolonged inactivity through a decline in analytics.
  • The passive income model of Medium can buffer a writer's analytics for a short period but is not sustainable for extended breaks in writing.
  • The author believes that writing and publishing content frequently is crucial for maintaining and growing one's audience on Medium.
  • Engaging in a rigorous writing schedule (8 hours a day) is presented as an effective method for recovering from a decline in readership and earnings.
  • The author suggests that Medium membership is beneficial for both writers and readers, offering access to a wide range of content for a relatively low cost.

How Much of a Drop Can You Expect When You Don’t Write for Two Months

I almost destroyed my stats after leaving writing for two months

Medium is a platform that wants every writer to publish new content to keep growing. And whenever a writer tries getting some rest, they punish them in the form of an analytical decline. So that the writer doesn’t even think about leaving.

But you will think that Medium is a passive income platform, where they reward you for your previously written stories. So, how will you face a decline in your analytics when you have your previous stories?

Let me explain it to you;

I can explain it because I have made the same mistake. So, what I am gonna explain are my own experiences. You can face something good or worse. But this is what I experienced after leaving writing for two months.

I used to write from 18 to 25 stories a month. But when I decreased my publishing rate, I uploaded 12 articles in November, while only 3 in December.

But after writing so much less, my stats didn’t decline. Because Medium has a passive income model that helps stabilize your analytics even if you don’t write for a week or two.

Medium’s passive income model supported me for a month and a half, but after that, it failed. Because in my case, it was not a matter of a week or two, It was a matter of almost two months. I almost wrote nothing in those two months that failed Medium’s passive income model. And my stats started getting down and down.

I used to gain more than 50 views and earn more than a dollar every day. But after I decreased my publishing rate, I used to gain from 20 to 30 views with earnings of 30 to 40 cents.

It means if you write so much less for two months, you can face a 50% drop in your stats. And from the above results, it’s also clear that if you write less for two months, Medium’s passive income model will support you for a month and a half. But after that, your stats will start declining.

It’s not compulsory that you get the same results as I got. You can get something worse or something good than what I got. But it’s clear that you will face a decline in your stats whenever you try taking a long rest from writing on Medium.

But don’t worry, every problem has a solution, and here’s how I solved my problem and stabilized my views and earnings.

My Solution

I tried writing and publishing more and more by challenging myself to write 8 hours a day for a week and then for a month.

And after two weeks of writing, 8 hours a day, I successfully stabilized my views and earnings. Even my views have increased a little bit. Now I get more than 80 views and a dollar instead of more than 50 views and a dollar.

I think it will increase even more if I try writing and publishing more and more continuously without leaving.
