How Medium Helped Me Rank My Blog On Google’s First Page
Getting on Google’s first page is the goal of many bloggers and business owners. In December 2021, Google had a search engine market share of 91,94%.
If you want to grow your business via the power of the internet, it is a no-brainer to try to get as high as possible Google’s search engine rankings.
The problem is, of course, figuring out how to do it. Especially when you have a tiny blog and are not a marketing or SEO expert.
I have a blog to chronicle my ultrarunning journey and support my business as an ultrarunning coach. It is still in its infancy. I set it up last year and have been posting relatively infrequently.
I am not trained in SEO or marketing. I am not even a native English speaker.
And yet, I was able to get my blog ranked on google’s first page — and even appear under the top 3.

Above me, the only two search results are from the famous runner’s world publication 😁.
My Content Strategy
Now comes the part where I reveal my elaborate marketing plan or my well-thought-out content strategy.
Or how I will explain how to write the perfect SEO-optimized blog post.
The five steps you need to follow if you too want to get on google’s front page.
The truth is, however, I don’t have a marketing strategy. I don’t have a content calendar. And I didn’t do any keyword research or the like before I started writing.
That doesn’t mean that these things are not helpful, and I will begin to do them now that I am becoming more knowledgeable about writing for an internet audience.
However, none of these things helped me rank on Google’s first page.
What helped most was the republishing of my post to Medium and linking back to my blog.
Why Republishing On Medium Worked
I have a tiny blog. Medium is one of the 150 most trafficked sites globally. If I write an article on my site, the chances of ranking high in Google search are slim since I compete with thousands of other websites that cover the topic of running and have higher domain authority.
However, if I write an article on Medium, I can use the already established high domain authority of 95. Plus, I can use the already established audience on Medium that enjoys reading about running-related topics.
This traffic helps me grow my own blog in a simple way: I first publish my article on my own blog, then republish it to Medium. I use the canonical link to show Google the article was published first on nicolelinke.com. This way, all the SEO credit goes to my blog.
And that’s why it worked.
That’s how you can get on Google’s first page even if you have a tiny blog, only rudimentary SEO knowledge, and no clue about marketing — you use Medium to help you along.
My Blog And Medium Combo
I am not using Medium “only” to republish articles from my blog. Quite the opposite.
I post more on Medium than on my own blog simply because I enjoy writing on various topics, such as life, philosophy, and mental health.
I have found a fantastic community of writers on Medium, and they were the main reason for my return after taking a 5-month break.
My blog is specific and focused on my ultrarunning journey and coaching business.
Writing on Medium, on the other hand, gives me the freedom to explore my creativity by writing about various topics and experimenting with different formats, such as poetry and short form.
The boost I got for my blog with Medium’s help is an excellent and welcome bonus 😁.
Do you use Medium to help you grow your business? How so? Let me know in the comments. I am eager to learn.
