How Many of Your Followers Do You Read?
Thoughts about Medium of all things
I have to admit that I do like to see my number of followers go up. I regularly (weekly or so) try to click on my list of followers and see what kind of articles they write.
Sometimes I am greatly surprised and find a wonderful writer that I want to read regularly so I follow them back. However, it seems the writers I want to read get lost in the mix and do not show up on my feed.
Sometimes they are not a writer at all, and I figure they are just a reader. I am always happy when someone follows me because they enjoy reading my stories and articles. I am not happy to see someone follow me and then never read any of my stories, or clap, or comment, or highlight. Makes me wonder why they are even here.
I have grown slowly in followers since joining Medium, but it has never gone down. Some months I might only gain 4 or 5 followers, and other months I might gain 40 or 50.
I wonder how some writers have like 10 or 50 thousand followers and they haven’t even been here as long as I have. Do they just blindly follow everyone and hope they follow them back? Do they acknowledge all of those followers in any way by reading any of their stories? Are they scammers? Are they famous?
I have wondered about this and have concluded that as long as I am growing as a writer, I want my time here on Medium to be authentic. I read as much as I can. I will follow the writers that I enjoy reading and I will try to check out all of the ones who follow me initially, but it may take some time.
Thank you to all my followers who actually read my stories and like them. Keep reading and I will try to read your stories too.
