How I’m Getting +500 Claps on Medium as a New Writer

An average of +400 claps per story!

When I started writing and reading on Medium I didn't quite understand how the clap system worked. I thought, at the beginning that we could clap only one time as well as on other social platforms where a clap is more like but it has the same meaning.(Instagram, Youtube, X, )

Time passed and I got how claps are working. It’s quite simple :

The more claps you delivered — the more you liked a story or a comment.

For those who are new on the platform — you can clap 50 times a story/comment.

I personally, rarely clap 50 times not because I don't like the story or the comment, but because I feel if I’m going to clap 50 times after I liked a story it will take me a lot of time.

I think Medium should implement a function where we can choose the number of claps we want to give without clicking 50 times on our screen/touchpad/mouse.

As I’m writing this story, my most clapped story got 500 claps :

I haven’t earned a lot with this one, due to its short form and low read ratio. But it’s a step forward the 1k claps on a single story.

I haven’t only got 500 claps on this post. I’m getting an average of +400 claps per post. That’s a good number knowing I’m writing for less than a month on Medium.

How am I getting all these claps?

I’m engaging with readers and writers. Every time a reader leaves a comment, I’m answering it. It brings a deeper connection and can earn you true followers and readers. I’m also doing the same thing when I’m reading.

After reading a story I leave a comment. It shows that I have understood my read and brought me value i’m also showing to other people that I’m here and this is giving me visibility!

I’m publishing consistently. I talked about this one in this story, so you can check it out :

I’m submitting my drafts to publications. This is very important because they all have an audience and an audience means potential readers. If you are a new writer there are tons of publications where you can apply.

Master your titles. It may be one of the main things to do, titles are the first thing your readers see. So when he read your title he should be interested in your story. I’m using titles in the form of questions.

Bring value to your readers — make them enjoy your stories. Your readers should get value after reading your stories (for example you are getting value from reading mine ). After reading your story they shouldn’t think they’ve wasted their time.

Thanks For Reading till the end.
