How did I discover a new scam scheme on Medium targeting writers?

The story that will help you to avoid being scammed

Photo by Sander Sammy on Unsplash

I’m going straight to the point. There is a new form of scam out there. I got this notification from “Carl Jeffers” ( One of my favorite writers on the platform by the way) saying that :

I really appreciate your response

Please, let me invite you to join our Medium writers community. Here you can connect and grow with other fellow writers from Medium.

Message the admin on what.s.app +1 (213) 218–7320

I checked his followers count, and got right away that Carl Jeffers with 1 follower is not him.

I thought it was a one-time “scam try” but today I got another notification. Take a look at this one :

Eve Arnold — that’s not the best scammer out there, he didn’t even try to spell her name correctly. Image by Author ( Screenshot of a scam comment)

The same comment that yesterday but with a fake account of Eve Arnold this time.

I decided to make my little investigation

So I wrote to this number, to see what is that “magic Medium writers community” that can help me — be scammed!

Below you can check the screenshots (Hilarious) :

I already knew it was a scam when I wrote him, as I said. But I was curious to understand his stupidness.

Because — he is stupid.

First of all, he’s greeting me with a Wikipedia or chat GPT definition of what is a Medium writer community. Hilarious!

Then he asked me to fill out his form. When I sent it to him he didn’t even notice I hadn’t filled the “Experience in writing part” because, of course, that’s not what he is interested in.

Of course, my data is fake

Then he is making me pay by PayPal his “magic community joining fee”:

friends and family of course because that’s the only way he can be sure I won’t appeal the scam on PayPal.

My advice to you is never pay to a stranger by friends and family. Always choose business, you will be able to get your money back.

And of course, check the account of people that comments and replies to you. Here we can see our “Eve ANOLD” with a 0 followers count and 0 posts. Should make you aware of a scam!

I think this is all, of course, I will send to our novice scammer the story instead of a PayPal payment.

By the way, he wrote me while I was writing this story. Guess what?

Clap for this pity scammer. He’s writing tons of comments on Medium and don’t even get his $49 on time! What a world…

Maybe this isn’t so bad? Now he has his own story on Medium!

I took this with a little sarcasm.

I hope you won’t be scammed out there.

Stay safe!

Thanks For Reading till the end.
