How I tripled my income on Medium in 10 days
I learned a lot, but I earned even more

I’m going to keep this short and sweet, and get right into it.
I’ve been on this platform for 23 days and I’ve published 22 stories. Well, twenty three if I include this one. (I hope that dear Adrian CDTPPW , editor of one of the best publications, Read or Die!, will publish this for me? :))
Like you, I discovered Medium from other bloggers and was wondering if it was really worth my time and effort? After conducting a short and brief research, attending a meeting with myself, weighing up the pros and cons, and despite learning that you couldn’t really make money on Medium any more due to all the new changes that were introduced only a few weeks prior to me joining — I came to the conclusion that I would give it a go.
The reason? Firstly, I have nothing better to do, then of course I love writing, and I have a lot of stories to share. So I thought, MEDIUM is the best place to be.
I started with 0 followers just like you, and some vague knowledge of blogging. You can read more about my journey here.
After signing a contract with myself and agreeing on the small print, I quickly got to work and started writing. I posted my first article that made me $0.88 to date, and I am very grateful to everyone who read it.
But, it was the first $0.02 that really got me going.
After learning that, according to Google :”The very top writers, less than 1% of Medium writers, make $5,000 to $30,000 a month. It took most of the top writers 1 to 2 years of writing for Medium before they were making that much. Around 94% of writers earn under $100/month”, I was up for a challenge.
Me being me, the virgo, famous for its analytical mind, ruled by Mercury, the planet of communication, I felt the whole Universe was backing me up. And of course, I mustn’t forget about Me. At the end of the day, it was me who had to survive the experiences of failure and got to celebrate a tiny bit of success in the field of online blogging.
So, considering all the data I gathered to date, my 23 days experience on this platform, my background in blogging — I came to the conclusion that, MEDIUM is a unique platform that gives a chance to anyone who is willing to write — to make money.
How much money you make, is however based on two main things. One that you can control, the other, well not so much. The first one involves some complex mathematical and algorithmic calculations, the other includes your time and effort you are willing to invest into your Medium journey.
The first one of these factors is probably completely out of your control, the other one however, is well within your reach. And as the famous saying goes, “Stop trying to control what you can’t, and instead focus on what you can.”
I’m yet to figure out MEDIUM’s algorithm. If you have the key, please let me have it. But I have figured out the more human aspect of this vast network of influential, kind hearted, fellow writing enthusiasts. And that is — the more you read, the more people will read your story. And I’m sure you already know this.
I do believe that the key to a successful start on this platform is, engaging with others. But please, don’t just engage for the sake of a follow. Followers will not get you $100 in ten days. Readers will.
Find your tribe or whatever you want to call it. Search topics that you find engaging and are genuinely interested in. Write about things you know, or write about things you’ve experienced and your perspective on them. Just write. Then go and read.
This is my honest advice about how I became the member of the 5% club on MEDIUM during my first 20 days.
