How I started playing Tennis at 32 ?
I pursued my passion, and after a 32-year journey, I finally had the opportunity to live my dream of playing professional tennis.
Let’s rewind four months.
I was in Germany for work, having moved from India two years earlier. A sports enthusiast at heart, I had played cricket extensively until my early twenties.
Upon joining the workforce, I transitioned to table tennis, dedicating four to five years to the sport. Subsequently, I immersed myself in badminton for the next three years, occasionally playing table tennis in between.
Throughout these years, the desire to play tennis lingered, but the intimidating prospect of starting held me back. I wanted to experience the sport before committing to an academy.
Overcoming my shyness and hesitation to ask randomly, I serendipitously met a colleague, a professional tennis player from my home state in India.
Excitement surged within me — this was my chance. I decided to try playing with him, gauging whether I could grasp the intricacies of tennis. Acquiring a second-hand amateur racket, I ventured onto the court.
The first day was a mix of challenges and enjoyment. Tennis, I realized, appeared deceptively easy on television but proved to be an entirely different challenge when actively playing. The initial session left me exhausted but intrigued.
My shots resembled a blend of badminton, table tennis, and cricket techniques. However, as the hour progressed, I started feeling a connection. Despite struggling to keep the ball in play initially, I sensed a gradual improvement. Drawing on two decades of watching tennis on TV, I subconsciously understood some basics. My experience in cricket also facilitated quick ball control.
