I recently deep-dived into my portfolio and realized that my second book has madeover $11,000 in sales.

This case study will walk you through my journey with that particular book, the strategies I employed, and how I turned an underwhelming beginning into a five-figure success.

The Book’s Journey

This book was launched during the Q4 period of the previous year. Initially, it did not meet my expectations, earning just $500 during that time.

However, a surprising turn came in January when it earned $366. The pinnacle of its success was in July, where it raked in nearly $2,500 in one month.

Strategies for Success

  1. Research is Key: The foundation of any successful book is thorough research. With the saturated market on Amazon, you can’t just publish a book and expect instant sales. I spent a significant amount of time validating niches and ensuring profitability.
  • High Demand Niche: I ensured my book was in a high-demand niche. The niche had several books with BSR’s (Best Seller Rank) under 40,000 indicating a good demand. The lower the BSR, the better.
  • Low Competition: I targeted keywords with less competition. For my book, there were less than a 1000 results. Always ensure that the majority of the books in search results are relevant to your keyword.
  • New Books Sales: Recent books within the last one to three months should have good sales, indicating that new publishers can thrive in that keyword area.
  • Passion and Knowledge: Being genuinely interested in your book topic can make a significant difference. It allows you to create a unique product that stands out in the marketplace. An understanding of the topic ensures you serve the customer’s needs, providing an outstanding experience.
  • Leverage Categories: During my research, I identified a favorable category that would give my book the best chance to become a bestseller. I used Publisher Rocket, a tool that provides exact sales numbers for each category, eliminating guesswork.

2. Quality Design: I outsourced the book cover and some interior pages to ensure top-notch quality.

I believe in outsourcing your weaker areas and focusing on your strength. This drastically improves the overall quality of the book and saves you time to focus on areas your skills are best suited.

You don’t have to overspend when outsourcing. You can find quality designers for low costs. The cover was outsourced for $20, and the interior pages cost an additional $60. In total, the book’s production cost was about $80.

3. Advertising: I invested heavily in ads.

Over its lifecycle, I ran various ad campaigns like lottery ads, auto ads, manual keyword ads, and manual product ads. This helped in boosting the visibility and sales of the book.

There are very few books I heavily invest into, only those that follow the crieria mentioned in the research process.

As the book started ranking better and became a bestseller, I gradually reduced my ad spend.

Not every book will hit the 10K mark, but with the right strategies, achieving success is possible. My book’s journey from a slow start to a five-figure income serves as a testament to the potential of the KDP platform.
