How I get 80% Read Ratio on Medium

These 3 steps will boost your read ratio.

Are your reads low?

Here’s how I get around 80% read ratio on many of my stories, and how you can get there too!

1. Be very clear with your title

The title is to your story what a door sign is to a room.

If people open the door, and think they are in the wrong room, the door will be shut again in no time!

The door sign has to say exactly what you can expect when opening the door.

It’s the same with your title. If people click on your story and realize it’s actually not what they’ve been looking for, they will leave. Down goes your read ratio!

Look at the two examples above. The titles are very clear and the stories give exactly what they promise.

Craft titles that are concise, and inform the reader about what they can expect from your story.

2. Cut straight to the point

There is really no need for hooks or long introductions on Medium.

Your readers are short on time, they want to get something from your story quickly, if not immediately after clicking on it. Or else they’ll be gone.

Look at this very story. To introduce my story, I just asked a simple question directed towards the reader, and mentioned what the value of this story would be. And probably I could’ve even left that one out.

The point is, you want to get your point across very quickly. This doesn’t mean that you should only write 300 word stories from now. Your story can absolutely have multiple points to get across.

But don’t let your readers waste their time on fluff and unneseccary introductions.

3. Provide value

If your readers realize, there’s nothing in for them, they won’t stick around.

That’s why you have to give them something of value. Inspire them, entertain them, or give them a lesson.

Before and after writing your story, ask yourself:

Who am I writing this for? And what will they get out of it?

If the answers are: “I don’t know” and “Nothing really”, make some changes.

By addressing the right audience and focusing on providing value for your readers, they will listen to what you have to say and rejoice in it.

Following these 3 steps helps me to write 80% read ratio stories.

Be clear with your title, provide value, and do that quickly.
