How Florida Is Reacting To Hurricane Idalia

Hurricane Idalia was the first hurricane to hit Florida this year, and it happened just a year after Hurricane Ian. Currently, Hurricane Idalia is very strong and is considered a category three hurricane. The storm approached 125 miles per hour and ripped through much of the infrastructure in Keaton Beach. The hurricane also hit elsewhere, such as Tampa Bay and Tallahassee. The hurricane did not hit Tallahassee as hard as it did other areas, but it still caused significant damage in the area.
Tallahassee is known to be covered by a tree canopy, which can be a problem for power lines and buildings. Trees have already taken out power lines in Tallahassee, and Mayor John Dailey made a comment about the destruction in Tallahassee. He said that storm damage “could’ve been worse”. John Dailey also made comments on the preparations for the flood. He says that the Tallahassee area prepared the best that they could and had backups for any major disaster. Right now, Tallahassee has a municipal population of 200,000, a county population of 100,000, and a student population of 70,000.
Many say that Hurricane Idalia is the biggest storm to hit the Big Bend in history. This storm is definitely catastrophic, and it is most certainly special. Idalia came from the East instead of the West, and this caught many Floridians by surprise. The Tampa Bay Region and low-tide areas in Florida have been hit the hardest. The waters have reached 9 feet high and have destroyed crucial infrastructure in the Tampa Bay region. This means that power lines and crucial water systems are down. Utility workers are doing everything they can to get important infrastructure up and running.
The hurricane has not only hit Florida but also North Carolina, South Carolina, and Georgia. Georgia is being affected mostly by power outages and flooding. 100,000 people in Georgia are without power, and this means utility companies are working overtime. Trees have also destroyed buildings and major infrastructure in Georgia. When Idalia hit Georgia, a tree had fallen on Governor Brian Kemp’s mansion. Governor Brian Kemp said that the damage done to the mansion was not significant and that no one was hurt when the tree came down.
Governor Ron DeSantis has reacted to the hurricane and asked everyone to find shelter and safety. Desantis is currently campaigning for the GOP nomination, and he is optimistic that Florida will prevail against Idalia. Most notably, Ron Desantis campaigned through Hurricane Ivan when he was running for governor. Governor Desantis has asked for aid from the government.
Earlier this week, President Joe Biden made a statement about Hurricane Idalia. He said that the government is willing to offer any aid to states that are affected by Hurricane Idalia. This could be like Hurricane Sandy, when the government offered a 9.7 billion-dollar package of assistance to New York and New Jersey. Nevertheless, Hurricane Idalia is starting to fade as it moves inland. The hurricane has no more warm waters to use for power and might slowly go away.
