Ron DeSantis Turns Down Climate Change Funds

According to an article by Politico, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis did something that was very unexpected. When DeSantis was offered IRA funds, he turned them down. The IRA stands for the Inflation Reduction Act, and it is used to combat climate change and other social and economic issues. The Act uses around a trillion dollars in funds to incentivize clean energy. One way that the IRA accomplishes this is by giving money to climate change infrastructure.
Ron DeSantis was offered 3 million dollars in order to set up the program, 3 million dollars to combat pollution and set up solar panels, and 341 million dollars to fund programs for consumers. This would obviously help people set up solar panels and other forms of clean energy. But DeSantis just does not want money, and he said that he would not take Biden’s IRA money. Currently, President Joe Biden is going around the country with his cabinet, boasting about the IRA. But Ron DeSantis intends to make a mockery of the IRA by not taking the funds.
This past week, Ron DeSantis was criticized for his speech about the horrible mass shooting in Jacksonville committed by a white supremacist. Since the shooting happened in his state, Ron DeSantis has been criticized for the policies he made. Some say that Ron DeSantis’s policies led to the mass shooting. Right now, Ron DeSantis is running his campaign amidst Hurricane Idalia. He said that he had done this before when he campaigned for governor during Hurricane Ian. DeSantis is very confident that he can withstand Hurricane Idalia and hopes that the storm is not as bad as Hurricane Ian.
Why did Ron DeSantis turn down 341 million dollars in IRA cash? Was it a politically motivated move or something else? It’s hard not to mention that Republicans are praising Ron DeSantis over this decision. Did Ron DeSantis do this for the praise of his party or for a different reason? DeSantis is obviously “anti-woke” and against the climate change agenda. The governors of each state do have the right to turn down the IRA. Four governors, including Ron DeSantis, have turned down IRA money. The others are the Republican governors of South Dakota and Iowa, and the last one is the Democratic governor of Kentucky.
The White House has not officially made a statement, but White House spokesperson Michael Kikkawa said
“It’s unfortunate that some officials are putting politics ahead of delivering meaningful progress for hard-working Americans.”
“Despite this, President Biden and his administration are working with cities, counties, businesses, nonprofits, and other entities in the Sunshine State to ensure Floridians benefit from the lower costs and stronger economy delivered by his agenda.”
Republicans have turned down money for political reasons before. During the Obama administration, Republicans refused Medicaid funds in order to show opposition to Obama’s plan. Nevertheless, people in Florida will receive rebates during or after the upcoming election. Meaning that the IRA money that comes from taxes goes back to the people in Florida. Ron DeSantis will probably be stronger among GOP voters because climate change has been a crucial aspect of the GOP conversation.
