How Do I Use Slack To Get Reads?
What is the secret to getting more reads on Medium?
As an editor, I get asked a lot of questions about Medium. There are writers out there who have a formula they say is guaranteed to increase your reads.
There are writers with a fail-safe, fool-proof, step-by-step process to get more money from Medium reads.
In the end, there’s one thing that has worked for me.
Build community.
Build relationships.
Engage with other writers by reading and commenting.
Slack is a great platform for communications.
When new writers join our Slack channel, they’re often daunted.
They ask me this question:
“What exactly should I do here? There are so many channels, and it’s a bit overwhelming.”
There are a ton of channels to try and help people make connections but it’s up to you to take control. No one is going to tell you what to do. We aren’t going to tell anyone what to do, except if they’re mean or disrespectful.
It’s like arriving in a sandbox, full of toys.
You decide where to go and what toys to play with.
Create a Project
Slack is a tool that allows people to work together on a project.
You need to decide what your project is, find others that are interested in working together, and invite them to create. You can use a channel that already exists, or add a new one.
Use A More Informal Approach
I try to pop into a channel when I have something relevant to share.
If you write poetry, go to #poetry-club, find a link to a writer’s poem, read it and comment on the Medium article. Then come back to the #poetry-club channel and tag the writer with your comment about their poem. Then you can put a link to your poem there and the writer might reciprocate.
Some people just drop links to their articles and leave but that doesn’t do much. It’s lazy, like dropping links on social media platforms without engaging.
If you want others to read your stories, read their stories. It’s as simple as that.
