Tim Denning is not unfamiliar to Medium.

I stumbled upon his website a few days back. It is plain. But, what I found was unusual. He named his Medium course: Medium Bad Assery. When I read it, I was mesmerized.

He is so exact when it comes to hooking audiences. He is an impressive writer. But, that impressiveness came after many hardships. He didn’t earn a penny in the first 3 years of his writing career. Now, he is a badass writer and an entrepreneur.

Content creation is the new approach to launching a big business.

You learn you fail, you fail again, you learn.

Think of YouTuber Ali Abdaal, think of Gary Vee, think of MrBeast. These people started as a creator.

Few among the numerous upside of starting as a creator are:

  1. You get to know your audience and vice versa.
  2. You establish your footprint across the globe
  3. You learn marketing tactics as you practice in public
  4. You get to meet amazing people through collaborations

If you are thinking of becoming a creator, here is the complete guide for you:

What Creators Do?

What are the qualifications to do a business?

An MBA? Huh! so old school.

How about learning and figuring out everything on your own?

How about failing in public?

That’s what makes the content creation game interesting.

When you start a venture you need to learn various aspects of doing business. As a creator, you get an opportunity to simulate the business environment on a small scale.

Upside — Zero Entry Barrier

Thanks to Tim Berners-Lee, the internet is Free.

Anyone can take advantage of the democratized influence.

You need some knowledge of a particular field and a rough idea of what you want to do. Even babies do this.

For now, create and learn how to engage with your audience. You will learn and evolve later.

How To Launch

No ribbon cuttings, no need to throw a fancy party. Take up your phone and launch yourself the next moment.

Choose A Niche For Now

You can be highly skilled in multiple domains. So you will start multiple hustles. It is dangerous. Pick 1–3 niches to start with.

Choose Your Platforms

Start where you feel comfortable.

If it is writing make LinkedIn and Medium your second den. If it is video, YouTube and Meta go well. If it is an image, you can rock Pinterest and Instagram.

I know you will say, Aniket, “there are other platforms too.”

Yes, there are many. But, first, make yourself comfortable with 1–2 platforms, later you can hustle your eggs with more baskets.

Be a hustler, not a juggler.

Is It Tough

It is difficult at first. You try a lot. You make mistakes. You repeat and repeat 30 more times and then you get that first shareable video.

If it is a picture, you think about color, text size, and image compatibility on platforms. Then you hesitate. Then you post.

If it is a written piece, you write a shitty draft, edit it thrice, and send it to the world.

You are not on a roller coaster. Nor on a cliff.

Nothing risky.

Nothing to fear.

No one will watch any of your content. Okay…Maybe 1 or 2 of your friends will clap or like it.

Don’t feel embarrassed.

Everyone’s crappy at first.

You’ll think, you need to get better. Yes, You’ll get the game. It takes time. If you are consistent, you’ll win. That’s the magic.

You will win because you will improve each time you publish a new content piece.

How To Learn

Reserve 5 hours each week to learn the tactics of the creation game.

Do not multitask. It reduces your efficiency.

Develop a learning attitude.

Read. Read a lot. Read till you feel exhausted. Now stop.

Make a note-taking journal. Write your learning. Use them all in your next attempt to impress the world.

Repeat this schedule each week.

How Should I Utilize My Time

Don’t check your stats often. Forgive the world for now. It will disappoint you. Plus you will waste time.

It is better to focus on creation. Put your entire energy. Do it wholeheartedly. Look at this as feedback.

If you are enjoying the process, continue. Else try something else.

If you are hungry for sharing good things with the world, learn to become productive. It helps.

Get good with the platforms.

Read as much as you can to bang your next piece. Take free courses if you are short on budget. Or grab a HOW-To e-book on Gumroad or Amazon. There are many.

Here’s one of mine in which I teach how to never run out of ideas.

Should I Begin As A Full-Time Creator

Yes, you can. If you can financially sustain yourself for more than 2 years, you can start full time.

If not, better it remains as a side-hustle. You can resign anytime later.

What Should I Do To Scale Fast

Imitate.

Good artists copy, great artists steal — Picasso

Steal the strategies of top players. Observe what they do, steal what they stole.

How Long Will It Take To Grow

Lol…Such a dumb question.

How To Behave On The Platforms

Be genuine.

Many say: Don’t work for money. I agree. Don’t keep money in your head.

Instead, add value. Make sure what you publish is worth the time — yours and theirs.

Don’t be a narcissist. Share like how I am sharing with YOU.

Tools

Although there is no dearth of tools, and the costs could go fancy, you don’t need to look sophisticated at first.

Begin minimally.

A laptop and a phone are enough.

More than this, what you need is a keen interest to learn and a deep urge to go on.

Why It Is A Gold Rush

5 billion eyeballs.

That’s the market size you have in front of you.

Yes, not everyone will be attracted to your charisma and you don’t need these many.

As you get more than 10k followers, you get to test your capabilities, you become responsible. People who follow you, rely on you. They trust you. When you convert that trust into value by providing brand insights, for which you get paid. You begin your business not as a stranger but as a credible trustworthy person.

This makes you a genuine person.

Treat business like teaching and you’ll go far.

— Tim Denning

It is not a gold rush where you become a gold digger. It is a gold rush where you become a gold mine.

Everyone benefits from you. It is a win-win-win.
