How an LA Community Activist Maybe Targeted
The manner in which the LAPD allegedly deals with its’ critics
There has been an ongoing investigation within the police department regarding a subgroup of police officers within the police department who allegedly go after anyone for criticized the police chief or the police department. Ironically, the police chief has been mum on this issue. Where there is smoke there is fire.
There have always been critics of the police department in Los Angles and elsewhere for that matter. Racial injustice has been an issue for far too many years to count and transparency and accountability have taken a back seat for people of color communities.
A well-known critic of the Los Angeles police department, William Gude, was arrested on suspicion of making a criminal threat against a homeless person in Hollywood in the midst of much outcry from area activists and communities.
According to the LAPD Captian Brent McGuyre of the Hollywood Division, he stated that Gude and the homeless person had a disagreement about the homeless man throwing trash in the street, who according to the McGuyre, the homeless man accused Gude of threatening harm, therefore they arrested Gude. There was no witness to the disagreement but Gude was arrested nevertheless.
No witness, no bodily harm, words exchanged, everyone has rights just like the homeless man had rights, well so did Gude but he was arrested. Why arrest, without further investigation? An alleged threat was supposed to have happened? All, seem a bit odd.
Here is an upstanding member of the community who allegedly makes an effort for keeping the community streets from being littered by a homeless man but gets arrested based on an alleged allegation from a homeless man.
Gude works in finance and lives in Hollywood, and this incident happened in Hollywood. Gude had gained notoriety and online support as an outspoken critic who filed complaints against officers at the Hollywood Division regarding injustices and abuse by officers against young Black men.
It just so happened that the arresting officer of Gude during this altercation between him and the homeless person just happened to be the same one whom Gude had an active complaint against.
Is this coincidental? Probably, but not probable. In my opinion, this is a tactic to silence and suppress. If this officer had not done anything wrong and a complaint was made against him, then why not wait for your day in court? Otherwise, if the officer is guilty and fears being investigated, is this retaliation against Gude’s activism?
Even though Gude was released from custody on bail, but the damage is done and the injustice reality of the police is now once again at the forefront. All things happen for a reason and a season. What is done in the dark will eventually come to the light.
Attorney Generals around the country are demanding transparency and accountability from the law enforcement agencies because records and complaints have unveiled much corruption, systemic racism, and all types of unlawful police tactics against people of color.
What happened to the arresting officer’s video camera? They are supposed to be turning them on when dealing with the public. Gude’s phone captured his argument with police officers who seized his phone as part of the investigation and Gude was heard saying that the homeless man who supposedly made the complaint against him was armed with a knife. Wow, but they arrested Gude and not the homeless man! This stinks!!
Gude became more of an activist after his 22-year-old-son was a fatal victim of a burst of gunfire in South L.A. that also wounded an 8-year- old girl and the ramping up of his filming of incidents skyrocketed after the murder of Geroge Floyd in Minneapolis last summer at the hands of an ex-officer, Dereck Chauvin who was found guilty and sentenced in the courts. Gude made it clear to the news media that he is not anti-police but his goal is to obtain justice for young Black men in Los Angeles.
Gude has made it crystal clear as an activist with a voice, a platform, and a following that over-policing is a problem, and funds financing policing should be spent on other stuff. Also, demanding to know who killed his son and accountability is needed.
In conclusion, without checks and balances in any organization, including law enforcement, much can go awry and cause a great deal of racial havoc in communities of color. The police’s job is to protect and serve all communities, but regretfully to say, communities of color have been subjected to much systemic racism at the hands of law enforcement. Those who believe in justice and freedom for all need to rally and make their voices known in support of activists like Gude. Then and only then will true change happen.
