Thirteen Footsteps

100-word fiction thriller for the writing prompt staircase. June challenge final day

Photo by 🇨🇭 Claudio Schwarz | @purzlbaum on Unsplash

The soft rustling sound of footsteps in the stairs gets closer. With each step, Anna’s stomach flutters, heartbeat races, and breath quickens. She stuffs her fist into mouth to stifle the scream when the susurration of the footstep stops at thirteen — her doorstep. The latch is undone on its own. The door creaks open. Life in her eyes fades away witnessing that strange, dark contorted form. Her hazel-color iris merges with the whites of her eyes. White foamy froth clouds her mouth. She falls into an everlasting tenebrous darkness.

The evil spirit of decrepit staircase groans in delectable pleasure.
